A Prescription for Living

Thousands of self-help books are on the market. This one was not written as self-help. It was written for those in recovery from alcohol.
However, anyone practicing its guidelines and suggestions can find a life of peace, joy and freedom from fear.

It must be read daily, like prescription medicine that must be taken everyday. It is life changing. Others will see the positive changes before you do.

A thorough journey through the twelve steps. Patrick Carnes is a pioneer in Sexual Addiction Recovery and has written a twelve step workbook in a simplified and concise way. This book covers all compulsive and addictive behaviors such as alcohol, drugs, food, sex, money etc. I have used this book for over twenty years beginning with myself and then working with others. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !

A gentle path

Some helpful suggestions, but defintely not the end all be all of 12 step guides. Remember, most of these "Guides" are written by individuals, not by group concience of any 12 step program. Therefore someone is making a profit over spritiual principles that are freely available and that SHOULD be freely given away.

I noticed in step 4 he has a section about "bad" anger and then "good" anger. This division is NOT in the Big Book of Alcoholics anonymous. This is purely some group therapy thing Carnes came up with. According to the Big Book, we addicts have to strive be free of anger. Period. I still get angry, don't get me wrong, but the difference is that I take action to turn away from anger. This is one big problem I have with the book. The 12 and 12 of AA is much better.

The author has done the hard work for you!

The author brilliantly collates what must amount to a seemingly infinite amount of material. Terms are clearly explained and chapters follow a coherent path, allbeit to a conclusion (minus one star) that wasn't expected... but the journey was well worth it!

Short case studies and examples are easy to skip over but good to see them. The content is deep enough for a University audience and at a reasonable length to link to practical applications as well as leave your mind tinkering. It is a first-time theoretical read and a stepping-stone to broader material as it impartially outlines the arguments for and against each theory.

In the end you are forced to decide for yourself! For the moment I have made my mind up on the theoretical side - how about you? In hindsight the decision to get this title was very easy.

This is a very helpful introductory book related to SLL theories. It's a must-read for all those whose work/study is related to the field. The authors successfully compile an enormous amount of information regarding the subject.

One of the pleasures of owning a floral school is developing our floral school library.

It gives me a good excuse to buy books dealing with a wide range of subjects, to read and enjoy them, and to let others know about goodies that relate to our common interests.
It takes a lot to impress me though. There are books, and there are books!

I had the pleasure of reading "How to Grow Fresh Air: 50 House Plants that Purify Your Home or Office" by BC Wolverton.
Wolverton explored the healthy aspects of plants in terms of how they help to purify air and contribute to a more livable environment. I love that book.

Well, he's at it again!

This one is called " Plants: Why You Can't Live Without Them."

Along with co-author Kozaburo Takenaka, Wolverton provides a wonderful summary of just how critical plants are for human health and well being. Chapters like "Is the Air Indoors Making You Sick," Plants: Nature's Air Purifiers," "Medicinal Plants, " and more make their points in a succinct and appealing manner. (Be warned: The chapter on indoor air pollution made me not want to do any renovations in my home without careful and considerable examination of home construction materials). The benefits of plants in terms of reducing indoor air pollutants is discussed and documented as are many areas in which plants contribute to human well being.

When I was an undergraduate, one of my favorite courses was one called, "Plants And Man." It dealt with the benefits of plants and the social aspects of horticulture.
This book reads like a far more interesting and useful update of the subject for the 21st Century.

Wolverton and Tekenaka, in part wanted this book to provide a written legacy to their descendents of their contribution in making our environment a better place.

It is my hope that this book gets widespread attention, and that their legacy encouraging the use of plants to improve our environment, go far beyond the written page.

About the Author
Michael Ondaatje is the author of five novels, a memoir, a non-fiction book on film and several books of poetry. His novel The English Patient won the Booker Prize in 1992. I first read Ondaatje’s CINNAMON PEELER in the early 1990s and it led me to repeatedly seek his sublime literary voice (and envy every student who crossed his professorial path!). An Ondaatje work invariably emerges as a jewel, reflective of an inherent exotic Eastern ancestry, merged with (or contrasted against) the rawness of his acquired Western outlook. The blend, produced in poetry, prose or in combination, results in a unique “dialect” of reality accented by the erotic, funny and brutal. The novel took eight years to complete and proves more profound than THE ENGLISH PATIENT which left me bereft. In ANIL’s GHOST, present day Sri Lankan tragedy marks the lives of the main characters caught by choice or circumstance in a murderous society questionable on all sides. Ondaatje often grieves in fiction and poetry for the lost and for what he sees as truth denied. Here the mystique of archeology and its search for answers in his own culture and others’ reveals the infinite sadness and irony of some previously-considered “modernity” corrupted and turned to dust. Crimes of humanity never cease, only the places, time, and methods change.

This real sharing is remarkable! Petrina was able to lead a normal life after 8 sessions of therapy with Dr Peter Mack and this is something that counseling or medicine can ever do.

Petrina is a very courageous young lady who lived her life by facing reality and walking through it. She has enabled herself to make a difference in her life with the help of a caring therapist.

Dr Peter Mack helped Petrina recover and heal within a ridiculously short time that is unexplainable by medical context and research.

This book is a MUST read for those who are ready to assume responsibility and live their life to the fullest. It is truly an eye opener. If Petrina can do it, so can you!

This book is highly recommended for ALL to read and it would be a pity to miss it.

Hypnotic book

I started reading this book at 8pm just after dinner and could not put it down. Finished the entire book in one sitting 4 hours later. The book certainly captures the attention of the reader and I felt like I was in a trance!

I am a student of hypnotherapy & past life regression therapy and a reiki practitioner. I found the book especially interesting in the way the writer, a medical doctor, used alternative therapy techniques to treat his patient.

For students/practitioners of hypnotherapy and past life regression therapy, this book not only gives some valuable pratical guide in how to work together with your client/patient but also on how a practitioner should conscientiously work towards the highest good of his client.

Fascinating Read!

Healing in itself is so powerful and Dr Mack shows that with all the medical sciences, there are alternative paths that can help patients reach deep into oneself in getting to the root of deeper wounds.

Once I started reading, it was so intriguing that I found it hard to put it down until I completed the book. It is amazing that Dr. Mack, a surgical doctor, went all the way out of his medical boundaries to seek deep into the source of the problems to help his patients.

His persistence, dedication and generosity are admirable.

About the Author
DENNIS PLIES has been a professor of music at Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon, for more than thirty-five years. He has taught aural skills and piano, directed jazz ensembles, and taught a popular humanities course. He has had a lifelong interest in the art of teaching, and has performed regularly as a jazz artist, having written his doctoral dissertation on the pedagogy of jazz improvisation. Dr. Plies defines himself with six words: “friend, teacher, musician, writer, thinker, improviser.” He and his wife Barbara live in Portland near their four adult children.

A challenge to live by faith, get out and improvise, and engage in productive dialogue. This book is written from a personal perspective, sharing the author's personal journey, that relates jazz to life, combining esthetics with reason and experience. Well worth the thought provoking read.

I absolutely love this book. I already had an idea of how dominant and strong willed Evan was but omg reading his POV just melted my panties right off. The author did a great job of showing us rather than telling us the characters feelings. There are a few times that I got teary eyes. I thought I was not going to like Alina but after seeing everything that she went through, she deserved a little pity but she was also a very strong character. Anyone that knows me knows my favorite from this series is Noah but Evan came so closed to taking the title. You will find a little bit of everything in this book and I think that is what I love most.. You have steamy scenes, amazing emotions, actions, suspense, love and more hot moments. I cant stop talking about how intense Evan is out all the brothers, he has been the one that got to me the most. I Will definitely recommend this to all my fellow readers friends.

The great end to an even greater series!

I finally got the extra time to read the last book in the Stone Brothers Series and it was definitely worth the wait! It was even more than I expected it to be! I knew that Evan was going to be the most complex brother of the three and he is! I love how the story line flows and also that the author brings just enough background from the other two books to help remind us of their story lines but not too much so that we feel like we are re-reading them. And just like with the previous two books in the series the character development is spot on. I feel like I know the Stone Brothers as if they are my own family members. In Uncovering Stone we learn about Evan's darker side and we learn what makes Evan tick and we learn how his past is responsible to molding Evan into the kind of man he is today. We also get an inside peek at Alani's past and we get to see why she is the woman that she is. There is just the right amount of suspense and drama to keep us guessing all the way to the end. To say that there is some intense and steamy sex scenes would most definitely be an understatement. They will most certainly heat things up when you read them! Probably not a good idea to read those parts if your out in public. This book and the other two in the series will most definitely be put in my re-read collection. Great job T! I look forward to your next series!

Loved Uncovering Stone so hard!!

It's sad to see an ending to a great series. T Saint John has done it again with her last Stone brother Evan Stone in Uncovering Stone. Evan is your typical Manwhore. He's also arrogant, aggressive, emotionless, obsessive, overprotective, overly OCD...basically your average Alpha male. Alani is your typical independent woman who doesn't want Evan because of his said ways. But of course, fate had it worked out when Alani is being stalked and threatened by a man in her past that she's been investigating since that horrific night where her and Kerrigan were almost raped. Evan steps in to protect her fiercely. Because in the mind of Evan Stone, Alani is his and what's his he must protect. I knew from the beginning of Finding Stone, Evan was going to be my favorite brother and I was so right! T Saint John writing style is flawless, making you feel what the characters are feeling. And boy was I feeling everything from anger to happy to sad to WTF???. It was definitely an emotional Rollercoaster with Evan and Alani and their up & down relationship. I have to say that Alani was getting on my nerves at one point but I truly understood why she was the way that she was. I wanted to take my time with this book but it was so damn good..I got done with it by the end of the day. I love love loved this book so hard and loved Evan even harder!

A stunning achievement - a tour de force of the writer's art

_A Band of Brothers_, _The Lost Regiment # 7_, is the capstone of one of the greatest series of novels I have ever read. In spite of some problems with proof-reading, which never really got in the way, this novel, like all its predecessors, manages to combine hard science-fiction, masterful military and general history, and anthropological and sociopsychological insight in a blend that cannot fail to move even the most dedicated critic. William R. Forstchen's greatest skills lie in so accurately and insightfully portraying an entire alien culture that one cannot fail to identify with those characters that are drawn from that culture -- and thus be set up for hideous disllusionment when the darker side of that culture is revealed. He presents the alien Bantag with the skill of a master antrhropologist, revealing them in all their barbaric glory, giving us glimpses of their religious and domestic life side-by-side with their enormous military skill and powerful grasp of the principles of war, so that one can't help but sympathize with them -- and then jerks the rug out from under the reader by showing the monstrous aspects of their culture. Further, he shows the Bantag in contrast with the human beings who have come to this world by accident, bringing their own strnegths, skills, weaknesses, their culture, their hopes, dreams, and fears with them, showing the two species, human and alien, locked in a life-or-death struggle to determine which will ultimately populate and master this world -- and for all their cultural glories and tremendous physical size and strength, the aliens finally come off the losers, lacking as they do any real understanding of what human beings can do, the value of such knowledge for military purposes, and even the "soft underbelly" of humanity, the capacity for compassion even toward defeated enemies, love of others that spurs them on to supreme effort when by all rights they should fall and be defeated, and their capacity for vision and creativity by means of which they are able, even in the face of overwhelmingly superior numbers, to crate a military machine capable of utterly destroying their monstrous enemies. Couldn't put any of the novels in the series down until I had finished them. I am looking forward to new novels in which that battle-torn world is presented to us a century after the events taking place in A BAND OF BROTHERS, to see what has become of the human beings and their alien foes during that time. I would also like to see a comprehensive atlas of that world, perhaps a world globe to set on my desk. William Forstchen is a serious rival to Harry Turtledove and Harry Harrison, the mastera of alternative-history science-fiction, as well as Frank Herbert, author of DUNE, and a true heir of Murray Leinster and H. P. Lovecraft. May he live for many long, productive years more, opening countless clear windows not only on this world, but many others besides.

Forstchen does it again - almost

Band of Brothers continues the Lost Regiment series, an intriguing blend of historical and military science fiction. The premise is fairly derivative of dozens of other SF books, especially Harry Turtledove's Videssos series. A US civil war regiment is transported to a world where humans are kept as slaves - "cattle" - to be eaten by a race of monstrous nine-feet high aliens reminiscent of Genghis Khan's Mongols. By the time Band of Brothers comes around, it is 10 years after the 51st Maine arrived, 10 years in which they have freed several human states and defeated two of the many hordes that feasted on them, all through the application of 19th century technology such as rifles and artillery. Beginning pretty much where book six left off, Republic troops are engaging in skirmishes with the Bantag Horde after narrowly escaping annihilation in book six. It is no secret to reveal Andrew Keane, the Commander of the 51st Maine and of the Republic's armies, is wounded (the book has the scene on the inside cover). The action focuses around Pat O'Donald, the gruff Irish artilleryman as he tries to hold the armies together. Most of the action takes place in Roum, in brutal city fighting which Forstchen writes quite well. His military actions are much better described than the tortuous scenes in Harold Coyles contemporary Civil War novels, and at least as good as Bernard Cornwell's Starbuck novels. But Band of Brothers, while not the weakest of the Lost Regiment series, is not the best, an honour I reserve for numbers three and four, Terrible Swift Sword and Fateful Lightning. Forstchen's narrative sometimes gets bogged down in descriptions of battle which are all too similar, a problem with a series like this. The technology once again takes small leaps forward in the book, one of the best parts of this series. You keep asking yourself, "what if the civil war kept going?", "What if technology leaps were injected, such as the Horde's harnessing of powered flight". But for novels which rely so much on descriptions of logistics, the lack of a map is not only annoying, but a serious omission. Forstchen should rectify this as soon as possible, even by posting one on the Net, so fans can properly appreciate his vision. In all, a good read, I stayed up till 3am to finish it.

Seven books, an epic!

An epic, that is all I can call it. While waiting for #8 Men of War, I sat down and re-read all seven books and believe now more than ever that these are some of the finest books I have ever read. I have a library of over one thousand books in my home, and The Lost Resiment stands high as the best I have read. Never has a book or series of books so moved me as an American and a student of American history. You can feel the power and the pain of their struggle as these fine men fight against overwhelming odds for one simple reason - to live free. The most important factor of the stories is that the heroes are people just like you and me. Just like any hero, a moment before they were a hero they were plain old folks, just another person. You can connect with the people in the story because of that, you feel for them, you feel their joy and pain, when they laugh, you laugh, and when they cry you cry with them. When one of them quotes "We few we happy few, we band of brothers" tears will well up into your eyes, because you feel the brotherhood he speaks of. I am now going to sit down and read "Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield, which was recommended to me by William R. Forstchen. 'Nuff said!
