When he was only nine years old, Satish Kumar renounced the world and joined the wandering brotherhood of Jain monks. Dissuaded from this path by an inner voice at the age of 18, he became a campaigner for land reform, working to turn Gandhi's vision of a renewed India into reality. Fired by the example of Bertrand Russell, he undertook an 8,000-mile peace pilgrimage, walking from India to America without any money, through mountains, deserts, storms, and snow. It was an adventure during which he was thrown into jail in France, faced a loaded gun in America, and delivered packets of “peace tea” to the leaders of the four nuclear powers. In 1973 he settled in England, taking on the editorship of Resurgence magazine, and becoming the guiding light behind a number of ecological spiritual and educational ventures. Following Indian tradition, in his 50th year he undertook another pilgrimage: again without any money, he walked to the holy places of Britain—Glastonbury, Lindisfarne, and Iona. All of this and more is recounted in this fascinating autobiography. The new hardback fourth edition is published in 2014 to commemorate 25 years since the foundation of Schumacher College, with new chapters about the college and to bring Satish’s story up-to-date.

About the Author
Satish Kumar is the founder of Schumacher College in Devon, UK, which offers transformative learning for sustainable living. He is the author of Earth Pilgrim, Spiritual Compass, and You Are Therefore I Am. His life has been permeated by the theme of pilgrimage: at age nine he became a wandering Jain monk, and in 1962 he set out on a peace pilgrimage from the grave of Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi to Moscow, Paris, London, and Washington, DC—the four nuclear powers of the day.

A true natural human .

Satish is one rare human who lives life on his terms . He walks the talk . He also is a man we need in our chaotic and confused way of living on this beautiful planet , Earth . If we don't mend our ways , we will destroy our planet . The eco system is all interconnected and whole . We are part of this eco system and not apart ! Satish points to a simple good living with high values and always remains humble and very close to nature , which is our true nature .
