Read 26.2 with Donna

If you love running, if you are a cancer survivor, or if you know someone else who is, Donna Deegan's "Through Rose Colored Glasses" should be on your reading list. Buy it now!
Donna Deegan is an anchorwoman on First Coast News in Jacksonville, Florida. She is also organizer of "Run 26.2 with Donna," the National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer. This is Donna's second book. In an earlier book, "The Good Fight," she described twice battling and beating breast cancer. "Rose Colored" continues where the first book stopped, describing a third encounter with cancer just as she was organizing her marathon in its first year, 2008.
The first third of "Through Rose Colored Glasses" covers the discovery and treatment of Donna's third cancer bout. The second third covers the marathon, organizing and running it. The third part covers the race afterward, Donna's faith and belief in a holistic approach to healing.
I enjoyed the first part the most, because it allowed me to peer into the mind of a cancer victim--before she knew she would be a cancer survivor. First, you cry (to borrow the title of another book on breast cancer). Then you go to a hospital like Mayo Clinic, where the doctors understand what you're facing. Then you get on with the rest of your life, hopefully learning from the experience.
What intrigued me was the "fear" Donna felt after first diagnose. Well, who wouldn't experience fear? People die from cancer. But also showing through the pages was what an uptight lady Donna Deegan was. She has a high stress job, working as TV anchor. Her husband Tim is a meteorologist on the same station. I sensed that part of Donna's fear was not so much the threat against her life or physical beauty, but the threat it posed to Tim and her two growing children.
Now looking toward its fourth year, Run 26.2 With Donna has the potential to become a great Destination Marathon. Beautiful Course. Good time of year for a race in Florida. Superbly organized. Fun. Most attractive, the entry fees of runners and more goes into research to not merely fight breast cancer, but to finish it.
Books often work best when they move the reader from A to Z, from one reality to another. Homer figured this out when he created "The Odyssey." Most interesting in the closing chapters about Donna's current life is that she seems to have thrust the "fear" demonstrated in the opening chapters out of her life. Still in that high-stress job, Donna seems less the high-stress lady. I love to see it when she posts pictures on her Facebook page of sunrises over the Atlantic Ocean.
I hope Donna Deegan lives to see a lot of them.
