Waste of $9.99. Don't buy.

Poorly written. Spelling mistakes, absurdly long sentences and poor grammar make this 'book' difficult to read. For an author who claims to have developed the "Ultimate Study Method", I assumed his command of writing was at an adult level before I bought this book.

The multitude of 'reviewers' for this book who have also reviewed "The Art of Martial Arts Kicks" leads me to suspect that most the reviews for this book are fake, probably paid for by the author. The big giveaway was 'Monique', who has a tendency to write reviews for the books that she buys her grandson.

The actual methods in this book appear to be a cheap copy of a number of other systems. The only good thing about this book was the bibliography, which contains a number of useful books, which I've already read.

I suggest you spend your money elsewhere.

Interesting book that had quite a bit of information

As you can tell from the Table of Contents, this book is FULL of study tricks, such as speed reading, techniques for quick mental math, easy memorization, enhancing concentration and focus, and more.

I was familiar with a lot of the methods taught in this book, but I learned a few new tricks, so that was cool. There were some grammar mistakes and spots where the writing seemed a bit rushed, but it wasn't a big deal.

All in all, I'm happy with my purchase.

I also just finished The Power of Words: Unlock Your Ability to Learn and Do Anything and found it fascinating and incredibly practical as a student. I wish I would've read this book years ago... I would've gotten way better grades.

This is actually excellent

I was a little iffy about buying this book, but I'm glad I did. All of the information could be gleaned from other sources I suppose, but the author brings it all together nicely. I'm using the speed reading and mind mapping techniques together in the system the author calls "The Ultimate Study Method", and I'm seeing fantastic results (virtually instantly). I'm a noob with all this stuff, but I have to be honest, this is one of the best books I've purchased in a while. There may be equal or better books on the topic, but this one is actually a life changer for me. Great for students and people who want to learn quickly and with great comprehension.

This solid sociological text reviews each of the major players in Classical Sociological thought. What's interesting is how each of the thinkers is given context in their life and times.

Also, this book did a lot to undo the mis-teaching of Marx and Durkheim that I had experienced with earlier instructors. This book is worth reading for those chapters alone.

Thorough but unreadable

This textbook is very thorough but some of the writing style is so unnecessarily obtuse that it is frustrating to the college student, which is its audience. The difference between the two authors seems to be apparent in the clarity of the writing. I was left guessing which author I found readable and which one I didn't. Although I continue to use this text, I am always looking out for an alternative. Even I, the professor, have to go to secondary sources to see what the author is trying to say.

Read 26.2 with Donna

If you love running, if you are a cancer survivor, or if you know someone else who is, Donna Deegan's "Through Rose Colored Glasses" should be on your reading list. Buy it now!

Donna Deegan is an anchorwoman on First Coast News in Jacksonville, Florida. She is also organizer of "Run 26.2 with Donna," the National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer. This is Donna's second book. In an earlier book, "The Good Fight," she described twice battling and beating breast cancer. "Rose Colored" continues where the first book stopped, describing a third encounter with cancer just as she was organizing her marathon in its first year, 2008.

The first third of "Through Rose Colored Glasses" covers the discovery and treatment of Donna's third cancer bout. The second third covers the marathon, organizing and running it. The third part covers the race afterward, Donna's faith and belief in a holistic approach to healing.

I enjoyed the first part the most, because it allowed me to peer into the mind of a cancer victim--before she knew she would be a cancer survivor. First, you cry (to borrow the title of another book on breast cancer). Then you go to a hospital like Mayo Clinic, where the doctors understand what you're facing. Then you get on with the rest of your life, hopefully learning from the experience.

What intrigued me was the "fear" Donna felt after first diagnose. Well, who wouldn't experience fear? People die from cancer. But also showing through the pages was what an uptight lady Donna Deegan was. She has a high stress job, working as TV anchor. Her husband Tim is a meteorologist on the same station. I sensed that part of Donna's fear was not so much the threat against her life or physical beauty, but the threat it posed to Tim and her two growing children.

Now looking toward its fourth year, Run 26.2 With Donna has the potential to become a great Destination Marathon. Beautiful Course. Good time of year for a race in Florida. Superbly organized. Fun. Most attractive, the entry fees of runners and more goes into research to not merely fight breast cancer, but to finish it.

Books often work best when they move the reader from A to Z, from one reality to another. Homer figured this out when he created "The Odyssey." Most interesting in the closing chapters about Donna's current life is that she seems to have thrust the "fear" demonstrated in the opening chapters out of her life. Still in that high-stress job, Donna seems less the high-stress lady. I love to see it when she posts pictures on her Facebook page of sunrises over the Atlantic Ocean.

I hope Donna Deegan lives to see a lot of them.

It just doesn’t feel right. After all, the urban gay male culture surrounding him fully supports his sexual exploits as long as the sex is safe. And since gay male sex addicts may not discuss their sexual behavior even with good friends, nobody challenges them on their late-night exploits in unsafe places, their arrest record or brushes with the law, or potential health risks because of their behavior.

The truth is gay male sex addicts are not compulsively sexual because of their sexual orientation, but rather as a consequence of their individual psychological issues and biological predisposition toward addiction. This is exactly the same set of risk factors presented by straight male sex addicts.

Unfortunately, for the gay (sex) addict, his increasingly destructive patterns of behavior take place against a cultural background of dramatically greater sexual and social freedoms than those enjoyed by his heterosexual peers. The single urban gay man who has problems with sex, alcohol, or drugs is in some ways a prisoner of his own freedoms, having fewer cultural opportunities for self-examination and less cultural support for behavior change than does an average heterosexual male.

Finally, there is a resource that can help gay men determine if they are indeed a sex addict and whether or not they are willing to explore behavior change because of their sexual behavior.

Sex is at the core of our identities. It is a natural joyous part of life and being human. But when sex becomes a compulsion or an addiction, it can unravel our lives. I wrote about this very thing in 1983, Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction. For the first time, this book explored the dark side of our sexuality and how compulsive sex can mirror the addictive system often used to explain addictions to gambling, compulsive overeating and substances like alcohol or other drugs. Thirty years ago, and still today the characteristics of the downward spiral of addiction look like this:

-Loss of control over behavior patterns and/or substance use
-Being preoccupied and obsessed with acting out pleasurable behaviors and/or drug use to the detriment of other life goals, relationships, recreation, health and vitality
-Using or continuing problem behavior despite obvious negative consequences
-Living a double, secret life while hiding acting out or drug use from those closest to you
-The inability to gain and maintain genuine intimacy with spouses and loved ones – due to secrets, lies and a hidden compartmentalized life

It doesn’t matter if the addiction is to a substance or behavior, whether you are male, female, gay, bisexual or straight, the underlying psychological dynamics that drive addictive sexual acting out are all the same. Addictions do not discriminate. Early neglect, abuse, character disorders, and other emotional challenges all play a part in the equation.

Although the path to addiction is the same for everyone, the gay male community has its own unique challenges. In addition to a sad legacy of HIV/AIDS, gay men typically have higher rates of drug addiction and alcoholism than heterosexuals.1 And recognizing sex addiction among gays is more difficult than identifying it in straight men.

A resource like this second edition of Cruise Control couldn’t be timelier. Since the first edition of Cruise Control (published in 2005), our sexual landscape has changed irrevocably due to new and evolving technology. Not only has this greatly impacted how all of us communicate and stay in contact with each other, it’s also changed how we date, mate or even simply hook-up with a stranger. Today, GPS and smart phone apps have changed the way men (and women) cruise for sex. The opportunities to locate a willing sexual partner now require much less effort than in the past, when one actually had to physically encounter another person to find sex. Today, a laptop or readily accessible mobile device tucked in a pocket or briefcase is all that is required to find endless sexual encounters of every stripe. While all this can be liberating for some- it can also cause big problems for those gay (and straight) men who find their lives spiraling out of control directly related to their sexual behavior. Losing control over pleasure can be extremely dangerous and accurately knowing who and when to turn for help can be challenging.

Cruise Control is an essential resource for any gay men who have found their lives unraveled from the grips of sex addiction. It is also essential reading for anyone in a primary or family relationship with a gay male sex addict. Today, a mere six years after publication, gay male Twelve Step programs now routinely incorporate it as required reading. Problem or solution:

This compassionate look at sex addiction details the substratum of the behavior. Like many addictions, it is the solution to a deeper problem before it becomes the problem. The addiction gives a center to a life, it covers the needs that the addict has not been able to meet.
The suggestions on how to deal with addiction are simple and difficult because they require the creativity to accomplish in another fashion fulfilling needs (intimacy, purpose, pleasure, self-esteem, attention, personal power_ that the addiction met.
The author is non-judgmental; he is highly articulate about a difficult subject and has the compassion needed to help addicts claim a richer life. I am a coach and clients insisted that I read it. I'm glad I did.

Interesting Perspective and Insight

I am unsure if I believe in the idea of a "sex addiction"; and, in fact, when Tiger Woods first brought it to national attention I definitely thought it was a ridiculous excuse for his indiscretions. After reading this book I started to understand the underlying issues and have been able to look beyond the term "sex addiction" to see the root cause of using sex as a coping mechanism. I think the book is very insightful, draws on excellent case studies, and provides good resources for people who need it.

Thomas Hull has written a truly wonderful book. I say this as a teacher, as a lover of mathematics, and as a fellow who simply enjoys having fun.

Project Origami is full of surprises and depth. Written in a style that is immediate and approachable, Hull provides 22 enticing activities - all based on clever paper folding, of course - that gently leads the active(!) reader on a journey of personal discovery. What magic algorithm allows me to fold a strip of paper at the seven-sixteenth mark with ease? How can I fold an equilateral triangle from a square piece of paper? What's the largest one I can make? Trisecting an angle impossible? Not in origami world!

Looking for a meaningful way to lead students into group theory? Graph theory? Do you want a new way to approach conic sections? Do you want students to discover and *own* mathematics? (Do you want to do this for yourself?)

Hull is passionate about his work and it shines through in this text. I pick up this book and know immediately that a year's worth of math club activities, student research projects, math circle courses lie in my hands. Concrete connections to curriculum (upper high-school levels, undergraduate levels) are made clear, highlighting the relevance and importance of this material to mathematics education. Every teacher should take hold of this book.

Understanding Origami

it's a book primarly for mathematics and Origami freaks. However, there is something for every level of skill in these topics. Very interesting approach of teaching geometric issues playfully. Even if one does not understand or is able to answer the questions, the explications give a lot of information to clarify the subject. You can skip the mathematics, too, and only go for the Origami foldings. The book could very nicely be linked to Robert J. Lang and his Origami programs, which run on MAC OS X, where you can create your own Origamis. In "Project Origami" you get some more back ground to how Origami "works" and it helps to understand the way to new, own Origamis. Needs some effort, time and work to get into it, but it's worth the trouble, I think. I am very pleased with my shopping.

Fun and illustrating excercises for an origami workshop for 10-15 year olds. Dr. Robert Lang, who makes sophisticated structures that inspired me to get into origami when I was you, recommended it. (langorigami com) I used the "hyperbolic paraboloid," "self similar wave," "2-dimensional twist," and "miura map fold" - a fold Japanese scientists used for solar panels that were deployed in space! I made the advanced 3-4 hour versions of these, and taught the youth the simple version in the workshop. I also showed them examples of modular origami and crease patterns for some of the more complex insects, forest animals, etc, of Dr. Lang.

I even used the tetrahedron to make dice for someone else's group theory workshop!
