About the Author
Steven Scalet received his Ph.D in philosophy at the University of Arizona. After receiving his doctorate, he taught at Binghamton University (SUNY) for a decade, where he directed the Program in Philosophy, Politics and Law and was an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Economics. Professor Scalet is the recipient of the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. Professor Scalet publishes articles in applied ethics and political philosophy, and is currently an Associate Professor of philosophy at the University of Baltimore (USM).
John Arthur was a Professor of Philosophy at Binghamton University (SUNY) before his untimely death from non-smokers lung cancer.� He was beloved as a teacher and mentor to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in his nearly twenty years at Binghamton.

Instant anthologizing

"Morality and Moral Controversies: Readings in Moral, Social and Political Philosophy (9th Edition)," compiled by Steven Scalet and John Arthur, is an example of what I call instant anthologizing. As a textbook for applied ethics or contemporary issues courses it is adequate. It contains the standard topics: a couple introductory sections dealing with the nature of morality, capital punishment, abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering, sexual morality, racial equality and discrimination, the problem of poverty, affirmative action, etc. And it includes the articles that are anthologized over and over and over again in the many anthologies available from the printing presses of the myriad academic publishers who are competing for market share. So, if the instructor simply wants a textbook that is a compilation of articles, this one will do.
However, if one wants introductions to each topic, written by the authors/editors, that clearly spell out the issues in such a way as to provide genuine insight to the student as he or she wades through the articles, then look elsewhere. What introductory material exists is extremely short and superficial. And, while it is true that there are some "review and discussion questions" at the end of each selection, they give the appearance of having been written without much thought to whether or not they will genuinely aid the student's understanding of the issues.
Nor is the price a selling point. Although there are some anthologies out there that are more expensive, the cost of approximately $100 means that there are quite a few anthologies, some of them really good, that can be had much more reasonably.

Somewhat complicated at times

Some chapters that include actual work of philosophers could actually be re-written in a simpler words. Took forever to come to senses about the meaning of the material. Just like The work of Shakespeare, it is good to read the original, but to aid with understanding explanation notes are of great help. This book needs it, especially for chapter 3.
