Lab 257: The Disturbing Story of the Government's Secret Germ Laboratory, by Michael C. Carroll

Strictly off limits to the public, Plum Island is home to virginal beaches, cliffs, forests, ponds -- and the deadliest germs that have ever roamed the planet. Lab 257 blows the lid off the stunning true nature and checkered history of Plum Island. It shows that the seemingly bucolic island in the shadow of New York City is a ticking biological time bomb that none of us can safely ignore.

Based on declassified government documents, in-depth interviews, and access to Plum Island itself, this is an eye-opening, suspenseful account of a federal government germ laboratory gone terribly wrong. For the first time, Lab 257 takes you deep inside this secret world and presents startling revelations on virus outbreaks, biological meltdowns, infected workers, the periodic flushing of contaminated raw sewage into area waters, and the insidious connections between Plum Island, Lyme disease, and the deadly West Nile virus. The book also probes what's in store for Plum Island's new owner, the Department of Homeland Security, in this age of bioterrorism.

Lab 257 is a call to action for those concerned with protecting present and future generations from preventable biological catastrophes.

Lab 257 Book Review
By Diana M
Lab 257 written by Michael Christopher Carroll is about Plum Island, which is near Long Island, New York and Connecticut. The book takes a look into the secret world of Plum Island and the connections between deadly diseases that have migrated into the population. Plum Island is off limits to the public and it’s also unidentified on most maps. Where it is identified on a map it is stamped as U.S Government- Restricted Dangerous Animal Diseases. The book takes a look at the connection between the outbreak of Lyme disease and the West Nile virus. The purpose of this book is to let the public know about the secret world of Plum Island and the outbreaks that are connected with the Island. The book also takes a look at what’s in store for Plum Island and to prevent a biological catastrophe.
At the height of Plum Island, which was considered “The World’s Safest Lab,” not much was known to the public, what viruses/bacteria it held, and experiments it contained. The Army at one point, and then the USDA, ran Plum Island; it also had multiple directors in charge. All the secrets of Plum Island started coming out into the public eye, from former to current employees. They exposed Plum Island, the outbreaks, employees getting infected with viruses, and the safety of Plum Island. The public was now aware of the severity of Plum Island and how unsafe it had become over the years. Plum Island was having a meltdown and it was crashing down hard. Plum Island had many downfalls from the get go, it had outbreaks, a hurricane that disrupted viruses, and employees that got infected while working there. Carroll does a great job at describing the effects of the deadly diseases that Plum Island harbored.
Lab 257 is an overall great book. It gives the reader insight on the mysterious Plum Island off the waters of New York and Connecticut. Before reading this book, I never heard of Plum Island, I never knew such a place existed. Lab 257 gives the reader awareness of Plum Island, the diseases, viruses, and bacteria that Plum Island handled and experimented with. Lyme disease and the West Nile virus are only a few that potentially infected the public at large. The book is very well informed and has a lot of information about the diseases that take place, and what can happen if contracted. Carroll does a good job at explaining all the testing, viruses, and diseases that take place in the book. He even goes to the extent of explaining the symptoms of a disease or virus if one were to come in contact with them, which can help the reader, visualize a disease.
What I did find interesting was how Lab 257 came to be, the Army came to survey Plum Island in 1951. They tested wind speeds and charted a regional population map, and inside the radius circles, from ten to fifty mile increments were the fallout zones. This includes the Hamptons villages, Long Island Expressway, and Connecticut if the wind were blowing the wrong way while a biological accident occurred. Dr. Hagan urged the Army to rehabilitate the old mine storage building, but retain its “fungible-sounding name: Building No. 257.” Now simply called Lab 257 they handled hot viruses performed in gloveboxes, and worked on small creatures as well as culture dishes.
The author also did a great job at collecting, researching and interviewing all of his contacts. The book is very well informed, but there is a downside, the author does a lot of jumping around with events and dates. So far I have enjoyed the book, it’s very well written, informational, and it keeps a reader engaged. My only issues are the events and dates that take place, and it can get confusing when reading. For instance Carroll will be speaking of the 1978 Foot and Mouth disease outbreak, but then will be speaking of the 2001 outbreak that took place in Europe and the Middle East. The jumping around with the dates are confusing, but I can understand why Carroll does it and it’s to keep the readers engrossed. Lab 257 is an incredible book to read and I would recommend to anyone that is interested in the story of Plum Island.

A Chilling Account
By Mandy R
Wow! It's amazing how places like Plum Island and the goings on there were largely unknown by the American public (and still are). This is a chilling account of the irresponsibility of the stewards of this dangerous lab and the consequences of such chaotic operation. It's also a reminder of how politics influences everything, and often negatively. There are some who will read this and call it nonsense; say that it's a witch-hunt against the government and individuals who worked at and were responsible for the labs at Plum Island. They'll say that anyone who believes a word written in this book are "conspiracy theorists". I say there is too much evidence to the contrary, and too many "unexplained" events, and this evidence is given by those who actually worked in this lab, and *unclassified* documents regarding what went on there. I would hate to think of what the full record would say. What's scary is that the government is now building a new Plum Island, just outside of Manhatten, KS. Sure, the building systems and the BSL4 lab will benefit from the latest and greatest in secure technology, but what about the irresponsibility shown over decades in transport of deadly viruses to Plum Island, that will now have to travel across 1/2 the country to get to their destination? What about the lack of oversight and haphazard protocol on the Island that led to outbreaks that were only contained because of the geographical location of the labs? We're talking about government departments that as recently as this year have "lost" smallpox samples, and "found" vials of dangerous viruses in supposedly empty refrigerators at insecure labs. Lab 257 should be required reading for anyone who will have even the slightest bit of oversight of these new labs.

Four stars because some chapters were a bit unnecessarily long-winded. Overall, a great read that I highly recommend!

This was a well documented book and after reading it ...
By Robert E Lewis Robert E Lewis
This was a well documented book and after reading it I fear our government even more than I did before. Michael Carroll documented many things I have suspected for years. My grandson suffers from Lyme's disease and I have survived a debilitating virus probably caused by a Flu shot. We are nothing more than lab rats to these scientists. I realized this over 50 years ago when I was in training to be a nurse.
