About the Author
James Herriot (1916-1995) was the bestselling author of memoirs including All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Wise and Wonderful, The Lord God Made Them All, and Every Living Thing. At age 23, Herriot qualified for veterinary practice with the Glasgow Veterinary College, and moved to the town of Thirsk in Yorkshire to work in a rural practice. He would live in, work in, and write about the region for the rest of his life. Though he dreamed for years of writing a book, his veterinary work and his family kept him busy, and he did not start writing until the age of 50. In 1979, he was awarded the title Order of the British Empire (OBE). His veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England, is now tended by his son, Jim Wight.

All Creatures Great and Small

I want to warn all Herriot devotees that in buying the omnibus editions they are NOT getting all the stories! For example in Jim's courtship of Helen, the episode of the Daffodil Ball is omitted. Let me demonstrate. 'In Let Sleeping Vets Lie' chapter twenty three begins:

"After the night of the Daffodil Ball I just seemed to drift naturally into the habit of dropping in to see Helen on an occasional evening."

However in the omnibus edition we have:

"After the night at the cinema with Helen I just seemed to drift naturally into the habit of dropping in to see Helen on an occasional evening"

How dare they do this? I am extremely annoyed to have spent my money on these omnibus editions. I will now have to go to all lengths to get the original books which Amazon will not ship to New Zealand.

The American publishers think they know better than James Herriot how his stories should unfold. They are wrong.

Just as wonderful as ever

This story is aging nicely. I read it again recently, many many years after reading it as a teen, and its charm is undiminished. Gentle, noble, gory and yucky in spots, displaying a deep love for the area and its people, and even including a sweet love story, this tale of a young veterinarian starting out in Yorkshire, England in the 1930's is well worth a read.

One of the best books I've read in my life. A must read. Very well written. Makes you want to write like him.

I remember seeing my high school biology teacher reading this book at her desk while she had some time to herself, while we did our thing with dissections, etc. It seemed that she couldn't get her hands off this book. And I'd wonder what the book was about. Something about creatures. Maybe it was about GOD and church and religion.

Now that I've had a chance to read this book, twenty years later, I can say that it is a wonderful book! You don't want this book to end. And now I understand why my biology teacher was so hooked on it.

This is a nonfictional book about an English veterinarian writing about his funny and sometimes dramatic profession. From how he started, to his everyday events in a small town (away from the big city such as London) to how he meets his future wife, and his gradual establishment of his veterinary life. This book is filled with funny moments that makes you pause with a smile on your face. And has its poignant moments that makes you realize its wonderful writing.

This book gives you a glimpse of what the veterinary world is like on his side, on the countryside of life, with real people and real stories, and of course, with real animals. Animals and people and veterinary work that you will come to love.

About the Author
John W. Santrock received his Ph.D. from the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Minnesota. He taught at the University of Charleston and the University of Georgia before joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Dallas. He has worked as a school psychologist and currently teaches developmental psychology and educational psychology at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and introductory psychology at the undergraduate level. Dr. Santrock's research on father custody is widely cited and used in expert witness testimony to promote flexibility and alternative considerations in custody disputes. His research has included publication in the Journal of Educational Psychology that focus on the contextual aspects of affectively-toned cognition and children's self-regulatory behavior as well as teachers' perceptions of children from divorced families. But his successors were less comfortable with this reconciliation and thus found themselves opposed by committed Muslims. These successor kings turned to the Dutch East India Company for support, alliance with Christians further feeding rebellion. Not until a century after Agung died was Islam and the court aristocracy - the epitome of what it meant to be Javanese - again reconciled.

The result was a society deeply committed to Islam, observant of its ritual life, but admitting indigenous, non-Islamic, spiritual forces to the faith. This, after 400 years, is the "mystic synthesis" of this book's title.

Waste of $9.99. Don't buy.

Poorly written. Spelling mistakes, absurdly long sentences and poor grammar make this 'book' difficult to read. For an author who claims to have developed the "Ultimate Study Method", I assumed his command of writing was at an adult level before I bought this book.

The multitude of 'reviewers' for this book who have also reviewed "The Art of Martial Arts Kicks" leads me to suspect that most the reviews for this book are fake, probably paid for by the author. The big giveaway was 'Monique', who has a tendency to write reviews for the books that she buys her grandson.

The actual methods in this book appear to be a cheap copy of a number of other systems. The only good thing about this book was the bibliography, which contains a number of useful books, which I've already read.

I suggest you spend your money elsewhere.

Interesting book that had quite a bit of information

As you can tell from the Table of Contents, this book is FULL of study tricks, such as speed reading, techniques for quick mental math, easy memorization, enhancing concentration and focus, and more.

I was familiar with a lot of the methods taught in this book, but I learned a few new tricks, so that was cool. There were some grammar mistakes and spots where the writing seemed a bit rushed, but it wasn't a big deal.

All in all, I'm happy with my purchase.

I also just finished The Power of Words: Unlock Your Ability to Learn and Do Anything and found it fascinating and incredibly practical as a student. I wish I would've read this book years ago... I would've gotten way better grades.

This is actually excellent

I was a little iffy about buying this book, but I'm glad I did. All of the information could be gleaned from other sources I suppose, but the author brings it all together nicely. I'm using the speed reading and mind mapping techniques together in the system the author calls "The Ultimate Study Method", and I'm seeing fantastic results (virtually instantly). I'm a noob with all this stuff, but I have to be honest, this is one of the best books I've purchased in a while. There may be equal or better books on the topic, but this one is actually a life changer for me. Great for students and people who want to learn quickly and with great comprehension.

Putting Thoughts in their Point and Place in Time

This solid sociological text reviews each of the major players in Classical Sociological thought. What's interesting is how each of the thinkers is given context in their life and times.

Also, this book did a lot to undo the mis-teaching of Marx and Durkheim that I had experienced with earlier instructors. This book is worth reading for those chapters alone.

Thorough but unreadable

This textbook is very thorough but some of the writing style is so unnecessarily obtuse that it is frustrating to the college student, which is its audience. The difference between the two authors seems to be apparent in the clarity of the writing. I was left guessing which author I found readable and which one I didn't. Although I continue to use this text, I am always looking out for an alternative. Even I, the professor, have to go to secondary sources to see what the author is trying to say.
