Random Access History

For each day of the year, "365: Your Date With History" offers up one or two short essays and a brief list of other significant events that happened on that paticular day. Each well-written essay describes a significant event (a birth or a death, a battle or the passage of a law) and then explains what flowed from or caused the event. I've really had fun with this book. Each morning over breakfast, I read the entries for the day and learn a little bit more about history. The subject changes constantly, so I never get bored, and I can always leap ahead to see what happened on my birthday, or my wife's birthday, or our anniversary or whatever.

Since "365" was published in England in 2001, the publishers have issued several books in a similar spirit: 366: More Great Stories from History: More Great Stories from History for Every Day of the Year (Icon 366); 365: Tales of War: Great Stories from Military History for Every Day of the Year; and Best of Times, Worst of Times: 365 Great Stories from Modern History (Icon 365). The last of these picks up where "365" and "366" leave off, focusing on historical events since World War 2.

There are a number of similar books that are similar to the 365/366 series. All are more lightweight than "365," but they are still entertaining: Whitely, "On This Date . . ." (2002); ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY (1999); More On This Day in History; Donaldson & Donaldson, "The Book of Days" (1979) (eccentric and quirky); and What Time Of Day Was That?: History by the Minute (2001).

For a more encylopedic and accordingly less readable approach to the subject, try The History Channel's "Today in History: A Day by Day Review of World Events"--this book has a lot more entries than "365," but it lacks Marsh and Carrick's elegant little essays.

On the whole, I highly recommend "365" as a thoroughly enjoyable way of boning up on history, one day at a time.

The best Sudoku book on instructions and tips.

I have written several reviews on Sudoku books.Generally
they start of with some instructions,some are very brief and some are quite extensive.Then they give you a bunch,usually 100 to 3 or 400 puzzles.The puzzles are graded ,usually as 3 to 5 levels of difficulty.Then you get the solutions.Personally,I don't find them of much use other than proof that the puzzle is solvable.In other words, you know when you 've got it solved.
This book is very different in that it is a 116 page book dedicated to instruction and tips with just enough puzzles to apply the methods to.The only other book that even comes close is Carol Voderman's "Master Sudoku" which I reviewed on September 30,2005.
Not only an excellent and very detailed instruction book,it covers just about everything you would like to know about Sudoku's history,the originators,the involvement of computers in their construction and a brief look some other number puzzles we are already beginning to appear in pictures and books.
Definitely the book any Sudoku Puzzler would like to have.If you don't know all the methods and tips covered in this book,you're 'working' with one hand behind your back,if not with blinders on.

52 Brilliant Ideas

This gives the impression you are going to be taken through the whole gamut of techniques right to the most difficult. In fact 52 is the numbers (1 to 52) marked on the subsections in what amounts to 2 or 3 main sections in the book and the few methods described hardly pass those needed for a moderate puzzle. Marking in actual possibilities is only mentioned in the end of the book in relation to a brief mention of doubles and triplets. The book is strictly for beginners and is a complete waste of time for anyone who has any proficiency. There are almost no brilliant ideas and the title is completely misleading. I passed the level of this book within the first few days of doing puzzles. The book was a complete waste of money for me.

Perfect Beginner's Sudoku Book

I have read quite a few Sudoku books trying to figure out strateies. Most books say the same things---they just have different covers; the ones that are bigger have more puzzles (and these are readily available all over the place).

This book is:

Short and sweet, easy to understand (for those people who don't want to devote their life to learning Sudoku!)

Just enough practice.

Walks you through some of the puzzles step-by-step (this is really helpful).

My favorite book so far, plus it's cheap!

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I didn't find it hard to understand at all.

I wanted more strategies and techniques, or I'd have given it a "5"...such as it is, it is a "4+" and well worth buying.

Poorly Written but Covers a lot of material!

Did anyone proofread this book before publishing it!?! There are so many grammatical errors, making it often times hard to understand what the question is asking or what answers choices are. Some questions have incorrect answers as well. It is a shame that not much attention was given to properly writing the book.

In terms of subject matter, I'm impressed. For the explanation of answers, content is pretty much copy pasted from the relevant areas of the course books. It covers a lot of content and it has helped identify my weak points as I'm currently using it to study for the WM certification. I'm planning on giving the exam in about two weeks but thought now would be a good time to post some feedback about my first reaction to the book.

I will update this post after taking the exam.

I took the exam yesterday and passed! This book was a great help! There weren't really any questions that were exactly identical from the book which appeared in the exam, but the book helps in thoroughly covering all the topic areas. This is exactly what I was looking for. I will still leave my original FOUR star review because of all the grammatical errors and some flawed question/answers.

Good Review questions

As an Old time SD/MM consultant, I have since moved to doing (mostly) CRM.
However, there are still some good opportunities around logistics, and hence I decided to
get certified.
This book has a lot of useful questions for revision.
In fact, if I had this book sooner, I would have certainly saved a couple of weeks studying.

Good Refresher for Certification

I bought this book a month before I gave my exam, this book explains most of the WM details and is a good refresher after reading all the SAP help on the LE/WM subject. This book does explain and cover most scenarios and might not be just enough for getting certified, you got to have working knowledge on LE/WM, read SAP help and then read this book, I surely appreciate the Q&A pattern and the explanation given in the book.

2. Good explanation per question
3. Around 150 questions.
4. Definitely helpful if you want to pass the exam.

1. The coverage on the topics is not sufficient on Storage Type determination, HU & SU Management.

Too many holes

I knew nothing about stop motion before I read this book so I did learn a lot but there is no way I could make a stop motion film yet. The book leaves too many holes. For example, while the book mentions dope sheets and story boards (and show small, difficult-to-read examples), it doesn't tell how to do them. The book also wastes a lot of time and space with extended quotes from people in the industry. For the most part, they are "funny day at the office" stories and not terribly helpful to a beginner. Overall, I think this book is trying to be everything to everybody so although many, many topics are touched upon, nothing is covered in enough detail. Also note that most everything is British, from prices of equipment to supplier and studio resources. So, if you're curious about the world of stop motion but don't care about doing it, this would be a good book. If you want to actually do stop motion, you'll need something better than this.

Love this book, terrific primer for beginners

Stop motion animation, by it's very nature is a multi skill endeavor. You need to know about timing, how bodies move, the effects of gravity, how to shoot video, how to take pictures, how to tell a story, and how to make movie sets and miniature figures! Wow, that seems like a lot and I hope I didn't scare you off.

My point is that stop motion entails a lot of different kinds of things --- And this book touches on all of these things. And it does it very nicely. You get a little bit of the history of stop motion and learn about some of the seminal works in the genre. And you get good information about how to make things move in a way that looks natural. And you get some good information about lighting, building sets and building figures.

This is simply an excellent introduction to actually doing stop motion animation. I used this book to make a short animation.

You can't go wrong and if you don't know much about how to do animation but want to learn this is a great place to start.
Highly recommended. It covers a lot of technical stuff in an easy to understand and not so technical way which is just terrific. Whether you are a amateur or aspiring professional you will benefit from this book.

Best book I've found as far as physically teaching the art, and not just history lessons. The book offers crucial lessons on subjects such as easing in and out, rig removal, and various other subjects. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to expand their knowledge in the field. Great for beginners and advanced animators alike.

Now, as an author, a popular guest speaker and Forbes contributor, Devin is devoted full time to championing social good. His current life isn’t much like his past. As an entrepreneur, Devin ran—at separate times—a boutique investment banking firm and a small mortgage company. He served as the Treasurer for the multinational vitamin manufacturer USANA Health Sciences years before becoming CFO for MonaVie. Over his career he led or advised on the successful completion of $500 million in transactions. Devin squeezed in two brief stints in government, including two years working for Jake Garn on the U.S. Senate Banking Committee Staff and another year working for an independent state agency called USTAR, where he helped foster technology entrepreneurship during Governor Jon Huntsman’s administration. Devin is proud to have graduated from the University of Utah David Eccles School of Business, which recognized him as a Distinguished Alum in 2006. He also earned an MBA at Cornell University where he ran the student newspaper, Cornell Business. Today, Devin channels the idealism of his youth with the loving support of his wife, Gail. Their son Dayton is a PhD candidate in Physics at UC Berkeley (and Devin rarely misses an opportunity to mention that).

A Good Source For a Few New Tricks

I've known what crowdfunding is for about a year. I've tried - and failed - to launch two Kickstarter projects. I think it's a great idea, but it's a little like hitting the lotto, only in this case, you're the lottery ticket. If you've got a story that touches the heart, you're likely to win. If not, you're going to be one the invisible many.

When I pick up a book like this, it's see how it relates to me. How can I benefit from the knowledge buried between these covers? Reading through this book, I discovered a lot of great success stories that won't apply to helping me. The stories that really tore at my heart are not instances I could use. The success stories all had one thing in common. They touched the heart in some way. As soon as I figure out how to launch a project to publish a fantasy novel and have it "touch the heart," I'll let you know. Until then, if you happen to know, please share. The other thing that they all seemed to have in common was a wide network of people who cared.

If you lack either of these two, even this book won't help. However, I will say that if you read this book, you'll see what kind of projects would work and which ones wouldn't.

Devin Thorpe did a great job is showing some of the better ways of using social media. Now, I'm not saying that I'm going to be able to launch a better Kickstarter project next time because I still lack the story. Why would anyone care? BUT I did uncover, through this book, better ways to spread the word.

The other thing that I found to be very practical - because I've always wondered - was that Devin Thorpe explained the laws/rules around and behind crowdfunding. The explanations behind some of the different models had me seeing bad episodes of Leverage when the crew has to break a loan shark because the dude with a dream couldn't pay up fast enough.

The writing was well done, too. It was very easy to read and it was engaging. That can be hard to do especially with this subject matter. Well done.

Push Into the Crowd

Have you heard of Kickstarter? IndieGoGo? Teespring.com? Those are all examples of crowd funding. It's the newest way of raising funds to finance all or some portion of projects that people or groups want to get done. In today's society it can be pretty difficult to find somebody who will finance an industrious project. With all of our social media platforms, it was inevitable that we would find a way to use them to reach out to the masses for financial support of individual projects.

Not all crowd funding projects have to be for personal gain or private endeavor. Some are mounted for the sheer purpose of social good. That's where Devin D. Thorpe's book, Crowdfunding for Social Good:Financing Your Mark on the World, can help. In his book, Thorpe breaks down crowd funding as "the newest way for nonprofits and social entrepreneurs to raise money for their causes, projects and companies."

Thorpe uses real-time examples to show us how social media, networking and marketing come together to help raise awareness and fund real causes and projects through crowd funding. Through his writing he teaches with ease and campaign example the in's and out's of succesful social campaigning from beginning to fulfillment. It's really a great, condense lesson for first learners and experienced fundraisers alike; learning in 166 lots of how-to's on maximizing the benefits of this new and burgeoning platform.

My advice? Get it, read it, learn it. Then? Do it! Launch out and start your own crowdfunding campaign. I did.

Fantastic intro to crowdfunding

Many of us are familiar with sites like Kickstarter and IndieGoGo. People use these sites to help them to finance their creative projects. Now everyone can be an entrepreneur! I have even contributed to a couple of them. I had never before heard it referred to as Crowdfunding, but that makes sense. And I haven't heard of that, simply because I haven't ever paid much attention to it before.

In this book, Devin D. Thorpe takes you into that world. He provides detailed explanations of how to create a successful campaign. He includes numerous real life stories, as well as the lessons you can learn from each person's success. He includes hyperlinks to their campaigns, so that you can follow them in real time and see how they are doing today. Most of them are great ideas that come directly from the heart to raise awareness or to help those in need. I got teary reading about a young boy who was born with an extremely rare genetic disorder.

Also included are many lessons on social networking and how to make it work in your favor. You may feel like you already know how to maximize that, but I guarantee you will learn something new. He also breaks down some of the legalities involved in crowdfunding.

This book runs about 166 pages in paperback, which makes it a fast read. It is also bursting with useful information. I received an ecopy for review purposes, but would probably prefer a hard copy if and when the time came for me to create a campaign. I would want to go back through and highlight important parts and would prefer a quick flip through physical pages.

'Crowdfunding' isn't directly related to Devin's other books. It is definitely a stand-alone. But, I can see how they would all work together to help one achieve their dreams of doing good in the world.
