This book is very difficult.

I needed to read this book for a college class and it was so far over my head my neck hurts just trying to look at it. So many big words it's unbelievable. It may have been a great book but I wouldn't know, I just sort of skimmed it to understand the gist and got a B on the paper I had to write. So if you are looking for an easy book to read for school I'd suggest a different book. If you are looking for a book to read for fun I would suggest Harry Potter.

A really fine ethnography of schooling

Penepole Eckert's book Jocks and Burnouts provides compelling examples of the depth and complexity of insights that can be gained by one who is skilled in ethnographic research methods and sufficiently committed to the work to spend one or more years studying a specific social setting. In Eckert's work the social setting was "Belten" high school, set in a predominately middle class suburb of Detroit. All told, Eckert spent two years doing participant- observation, observation, and open-ended interviewing at this one school and the area in which it is located. In addition, she did shorter periods of ethnographic work (qualitative research or simply field work, if you prefer) at two other schools in the same suburban Detroit area.

While Eckert used the full complement of established ethnographic tools in studying "Belten" High, she relied most heavily on participant-observation. Since she was thrity-eight years old when she began her research, she could not have plausibly adopted the institutionalized role of student. The other roles available -- administrator, teacher, counselor, coach -- were part of the "Belten's" authority structure, with which Eckert did not want to be identified. Furthermore, any of these established adult roles would have limited her mobility, preventing her from freely visiting court yards, the cafeteria, the auditorium, or just walking the hallways to see what was going on and finding students with whom she might do informal, unstructured, open-ended inerviewing.

Eckert purposely avoided observation in classrooms, giving priority to student activities outside of class, and, in some instances, out of school in the larger social and geographical context in which "Belten" was located. Eckert avoided observation in classrooms as another means of avoiding being seen as part of the formal organization of the school, and because she wanted to be able to actually interact with students, not simply sit in the back of the room and watch.

Whether Eckert's avoidance of observation in classroom settings was wise is uncertain, especially given her interest in curriculum tracking and the differential treatment of students. Ethnographic classics such as Rist's (1972) book The Urban School: Factory for Failure have relied almost exclusively on in-class observation and taught us a great deal about the organization of learning opportunities in school settings. On the other hand, Willis' (1977) very influential book Learning to Labor relied almost entirely on observation of out-of-classroom student interaction, especially the formation and functioning of adolescent working class peer groups, an interest that Willis shares with Eckert. Ellen Brantlinger's (1993) ethnography, titled The Politics of Social Class in Secondary School, while not of the same stature as Rist's and Willis' work, is quite informative and relied exclusively on open-ended interviewing conducted outside of school, typically in students' homes. Eckert, in short, is not alone among ethnographers of schooling in foregoing the opportunity to do classroom observation, and it seems unlikely that her work suffered because of her out-of-class focus.

Eckert's participant-observation is devoted largely to understanding how different groups of students interpret and respond to the social organization of schooling in decidedly different ways. Her primary focus was on two antithetical categories, the Jocks and the Burnouts, along with their attendant ideologies. However, at least half of Belten's students belonged to neither category, comprising a separate continuum ranging the social and cultural distance between Jocks and Burnouts, and referred to as the In-Betweens. None of the categories were perfectly homogeneous with regard to hebavior and ideology, with the greatest diversity manifested by the In-Betweens.

By focusing on the Jocks and Burnouts, Eckert produced an ideal type, a set of categories that highlight distinctive aspects of the diverse school setting. The student-generated name Jocks is a bit misleading, because most of the members of this ideologically bounded group were not athletes, but they participated in extra-curricular activities of all kinds. As Eckert understood them, they were motivated by a desire to gain status within the hierarchically organized school environment; to obtain the limited but valued autonomy that often goes with extra-curricular participation, especially in leadership roles; and, perhaps most important, to fill their resumes with the kind of entries that increase the likelihood that they will be accepted by a prestigious college or university.

The Jocks were exclusively middle class stduents who acquired from their parents and other close associates a willingness and ability to work within what Eckert terms the corporate organization of schooling. In Eckert's view, Jocks enthusiastic participation in an ostensibly meritocratic organization characterized by unambiguous ranking prepared them for effective participation in a college or university, and later in a world of work that is increasingly dominated by large corporations. In a very real sense, "Belten" specifically and schooling generally, was organized and functioned in a way that was consistent with the Jock's educational and occupational aspirations and expectations for the future.

The Burnouts, in sharp contrast, constituted a working class category similar to that of the Lads in Willis' book Learning to Labor. As with the Lads, the Burnouts had come to reject schooling primarily because, given their likely future prospects, schooling offered too little in exchange for hardwork and fun postponed until after graduation.

The Burnouts recognized, nevertheless, that a high school diploma could be useful even for those who expected to reproduce their parent's experience as members of the working class, and their lives as members of working class families and neighborhoods alerted them to the unfortunate fact that working class, increasingly, meant working poor. In effect, their orientation toward schooling was even more instrumental than the outlook of the Jocks, and the Burnouts were contemptuously dismissive of those who used Belten's extra-curricular activities and hierarchical organization as means of self-aggrandizement. In the Burnout's view, the Jocks sought to separate themselves from their fellow students for purely self-serving, status-conscious reasons.

To make the oppositional contrast between the Jocks and the Burnouts even more starkly defined, Burnouts who had an intrinsic interest in a specific extra-curricular activity felt that they were shunted aside by teachers, coaches, and administrators. Even though the Burnout's comportment served, in many valuable ways, to prepare them to make the best of the working class future that they expected to live, teachers and others in positions of authority failed to appreciate this. Instead, the contrast between the Jocks and Burnouts was interpreted by school officials to mean that the Burnouts were drug-addled and thoroughly alienated. In this way, a self-fulfilling prophecy was generated that made school life still more difficult and pointless for the burnouts.

Jocks and Burnouts is a first-rate piece of ethnographic research. I had trouble concentrating while reading it because, again and again, it prompted flashbacks, most of them unpleasant, to my own time in high school as a member of a 1960's approximation of the Burnout category. This seems to me to lend veracity to Eckert's interpretations of what she saw and heard in and around "Belten," and especially when studying the category structure that contributed to defining "Belten's" students.

At the same time, however, there are fairly long sections of Jocks and Burnouts that seem only tenuously related to Eckert's ethnographic data. As a conspicuous example, in the second half of the book, Eckert relies havily on Rosabeth Moss Kanter's (1977) book Men and Women of the Corporation. There is nothing inherently wrong with this, in fact use of an established conceptual framework borrowed from others' research is laudable, making Eckert's work less exclusively dependent on her own field work, and situating it within a larger body of literature. Nevertheless, parts of Jocks and Burnouts read as if they could have been written relying exclusively on Kanter's book and without referring to Eckert's ethnographic data. I'm certain that is not how the book was written, but in places is does seem far removed from information gathered at "Belten" or any of the other participating schools.

I also think that Eckert sometimes over-interprets and attributes more self-conscious purpose to significant actors than they may possess. After all, do teachers really know how corporations are organized and how to prepare students to participate in the corporate world of work? In an abstract way, teachers may be imbued with the sort of ethos of ranked meritocracy presented by Parsons in his 1959 article "The School Class as a Social System," but it seems quite a stretch to say that teachers are knowlingly, willfully preparing students for the corporate world of work.

Whatever the answer, Jocks and Burnouts is fine piece of social reproduction research that merits reading by a broad audience, including policymakers, educators, parents, and especially students who are trying to figure out what is going on. The substance of the book is undeniably interesting, and Eckeert is a remarkably skilled prose stylist.

A really, really, really wonderful book

This book is about high school kids and the way they view themselves, others, and the worlds of school and work. It starts with stereotypes in order to go beyond them. It explores why some young men and women are in student government and others are out in the courtyard smoking -- and yet it does so with great respect for both groups, showing how each group functions as a miniature society with its own rules that make sense within their context, however well or poorly they fit in with the grownup world. It reminded me of many things from my own high school career as well! The basic premise is that a typical high school student body consists of Jocks (annoyingly enthusiastic youths with a lot of school spirit), Burnouts (working-class kids who aren't on the college track and don't see much value to school), In-Betweens, and Nerds/outcasts. By comparing the values of the Jocks and Burnouts and how they relate to economics, the job market, and social psychology, Eckert tells a fascinating story of the self-expression of emerging adults. This book should be a big help to teachers, counselors, and other people working with high school students, as well as to parents who might be confused by the seemingly senseless world of a high school.

Short and very dense

This is a very brief introduction to regular expressions (about 25 pages), the SAS functions, call routines for playing with them (about 25 pages) with a few extended examples (about 20 pages). The 25 page introduction is so dense it is hard to process even though every feature has 2 or 3 examples of what "matches" the expression. So, if you have not played with regular expressions before you will need other books. The SAS code on how to use regular expressions is very valuable. If you can figure out the regular expression code to search for whatever you need, you can easily use the SAS examples to accomplish find and/or replace tasks.

The book does come with a framework program for testing every expression you write. That is extremely helpful. However, The book would be much stronger if it was written with lots of try it your self examples with worked solutions. As it stands the first 1/3 of the book is like reading the dictionary. If the the author had doubled or tripled that section with tests this would be at least a 4 star book.

This is not a bad book but it is probably inadequate if you have not done regular expressions before. That said, with this book and its examples (especially CALL PRXNEXT) I was able to accomplish my goals.

it worked like a charm

Matthew Windham provides detailed, worked out SAS code examples for parsing text using SAS functions that mimic Perl regular expressions. (One may download his actual code from SAS's website; the URL is given in the book's introduction.) I especially appreciated the code to parse XML. I downloaded it and adapted it to my situation; it worked like a charm. His explanations of how the code works are excellent too.

I wasn’t thinking of politics or ‘moral values’ when I wrote Devil May Care. Recent events have left me wondering whether my fiction comes uncomfortably close to fact. The book took shape over several years. When I started writing it, I could never have imagined a day in which the politics of our country would be driven by moralistic religious zeal.

Devil May Care is a crime novel, entirely fictional, in which the murderers justify their crimes as the will of the Lord.

The novel’s villain, Reverend Jack Jackson, is a charismatic, body-building televangelist who twists an obscure passage from the Bible into a warped theology that leads his followers to commit unspeakable crimes.

At the same time, the murderous reverend justifies his own acts of lechery and mayhem as part of a plan that comes to him through his delusional personal relationship with God.

Handy reference.

The Sky atlas companion goes along perfectly with the Sky Atlas itself. Everyone of those obscure deep sky objects, like those open clusters not in the NGC, have little entries. If you have the Sky Atlas 2000 already, this book is a great supplement.

essential, minimal key to sky atlas 2000

other reviewers have drilled down on details of this book's contents, so i'll limit myself to a few dissents. the book is essentially an alphabetical directory of all the marked deep sky objects in the sky atlas 2000, about a dozen items listed on each page. given for each item is its type (galaxy, open cluster, planetary nebula, globular cluster, etc.), constellation, precise celestial coordinates, angular size, visual magnitude and the sky atlas 2000 chart(s) where it is found, followed by a brief description that includes for example its physical size, number of stars, distance in light years, and (for galaxies) the hubble type.

this book is designed to be used directly alongside the sky atlas; it's not a stand alone reference. one reviewer complained about the cross referencing system: this is based on the sky atlas 2000 labeling with an implicit preference ordering (explained in the introduction, page ix). thus, the same object is labeled NGC3587, M97, The Owl Nebula on chart 2 of the sky atlas, but you must look under "owl nebula" to find its entry in the companion -- proper names are given precedence over catalog numbers and, among catalogs, the messier number takes precedence over the NGC number. (caldwell numbers are not used in the sky atlas but are cross referenced to their NGC or other number in the companion.) the same reviewer complained that there was no named star list but this is already given in the sky atlas index, along with the messier list and a list of constellations. and while the book is not spiral bound and does not lie flat for pages near the front or back covers, spiral bindings often chafe, crimp or tear pages if you try to turn pages too quickly, which isn't very friendly in a lookup reference.

for me, the big lapse in this book is its failure to elucidate the catalogs referred to. what exactly does NGC, or C, or B, or Pal, or IC, J, E, vdB, UGC, SL, SH, Ru or PK refer to? who compiled the lists, and when, and why, and what objects do they contain, and how many? just "NGC" without a number would serve as the perfect place to insert a brief description of this huge list and how it was compiled from 18th and 19th century observations, and "IC" could explain why this supplemental catalog was necessary. the catalogs are not even identified in the bibliography: instead, bare denotations ("B is for Barnard") are buried in the text without further comment.

Star Hopping or Page Hopping?

I received my sky atlas 2000 second edition companion book (I should receive the atlas this week). It is pretty good but right off the bat I have a complaint. In the main section of the book they only list the details of an object by its common name. This is a pain. For example, lets say that you are looking up M57. So you turn to all of the M's and when you get to M57 it say "Please see Ring Nebula" so then you have to flip to the R's and find Ring Nebula. Now if you also want to look up M58 you now have to go back to the M's (what a pain). I guess I will have to go through the book and write in at least the chart number of each object. I wish they would have at least done that. Their note could have said something like. "Chart 8, see Ring Nebula for additional information" Besides that the book is pretty good and they have different ways of looking up things. They even have a section that has all of the DSO's per map.

Now has far as each object that is listed goes the book lacks detail. The only thing provided is the bare minimum. So if you want additional information I guess you will have to go to the web. A small picture of each object even if it were black and white would have been nice.

Another thing missing although it might have made the book to big is a listing of bright stars and double stars. They recommend another two volume book or a CD ROM for that info. Having the double stars listed would have given the user a whole new set of night targets. And having the bright stars listed would have been nice even if they only gave the RA and DEC. If the RA and DEC's were listed the user could use this information as jumping off points when trying to find the DSO's.

It looks like I might have to pick up another set of books to help me with my jumping off points. But I will wait until I receive my atlas before deciding.

The book does what it is supposed to do and that is tell you what chart each object is located on and for that it does pretty darn good. I just wish they would have gone the extra mile and made the book a little more useful.

A little more information about the SA 2000 Companion:

The book says it contains descriptions and data for all 2,700 Star Clusters, Nebulae, and Galaxies shown in the Sky Atlas 2000.0 2nd edition.

The main section of the book, pages 1-227 is a complete listing of all the DSO's in alphabetical order. Quoting from the book "here is where you turn if you already have an object in mind and want to know three things:

1. Whether or not it is shown in the atlas 2. If so what char or charts it appears on 3. It celestial coordinates, size, brightness, and a description of its physical characteristics and appearance in a backyard telescope.

Next, the chart key on pages 228-229 is a miniature, simplified version of that found at the end of the atlas itself - a useful reminder of the chart layout.

Finally, the appendix on pages 231-281 alphabetically list all DSO's objects again, this time by chart number. Each of the atlas's large charts 1-26 is dealt with in turn, followed by each of the close-up charts of selected regions (A1 - A5, B1 & B2). This section of the book can be of help when you want to explor a particular reigon of the sky. Let's say you are already viewing the galaxy M33, which appears on Chart 4 of the atlas. You can turn to page 237 for a compact "hit list" of other object that, because they are alos on Chart 4, are similarly placed for viewing at the same time of the night or season of the year.. The appendix includes only the bare essentials: Object name, type, celestial coordinates, apparent magnitude, and constellation."

I like the Alphabetical list a lot. It makes it quick and easy to find objects. And because it's alphabetical all of the M's (for the most part, more on this in a minute), NGC's, IC's or other lists are all together. This prevents the need for multiple lists. Now the bad part of the book is that they have broken out some objects out of a common list because of a common name. Here are some examples of what I mean. Right off the bat when you get to M1 there is a note that says - See Crab Nebula; So you have to turn back in the book to the C's to find Crab Nebula it's a pain. M1 is on page 47 but Crab Nebula is on page 18. So I wrote in my book under M1 that information. If they would have simply said under M1 See Crab Nebula, Page 18, Chart 5 that would have been better. If they would have said "Crab Nebula, SNR Tau 05h 34.5m +22� 01' 6x4 Chart 5 mag. 8.4" it would have been perfect.

So going down the M list in the book these are a few of the ones you either have to flip forward or backwards in the book for with nothing more than a description that says "See so and so". M8 See Lagoon Nebula, M16 See Eagle Nebula (I wrote in page 25 charts 15 & 16), M17 See Omega Nebula, M20 See Trifid Nebula (I wrote in Page 223, Chart 22). While M20 is listed on page 49. I think you can see my frustration... With a little more effort they could have made the book a whole lot better.

NGC's

First let me start by saying every NGC is not listed. In fact the first one is NGC 14 then it jumps to 16, then to 23 and 24, then to 40, then to 45, then to 50, then to 55. The last NGC entry is 7822. The same nonsensical logic is applied here. For example NGC 7092 on page 200 say See M39 which is on (hang on let me look it up) page 51, chart 9.

If these flaws were corrected and a better description written about the object the book would be nearly perfect for what it is designed to do.
