What this humanoid observes and learns over centuries of human existence will be interpreted through each short story in the saga. The alien probe is as mythic as Prometheus, the Greek Titan who was said to have brought fire to mankind.

About the Author

Bard Constantine writes gritty futures and far-flung fantasy. His love of those genres catapulted his writing career, which includes the Troubleshooter novels, featuring the private eye of a dystopian future. Other novels include the horror/sci-fi novel The Aberration, and Shadow Battles, a recently released epic fantasy series. Don't read this to your kids...

I read this book as a little girl in Germany in the late 1940's and I bought the original German version again to re-live my reading experiences as a child.Even though life on the mountain with her grandfather and the goats, surrounded by all this Swiss postcard quality beauty, sounds pretty nice and even funny at times but that does not make up for the very sad story of a small orphaned girl that gets passed on from poor relative to poorer relative until her cousin finds a way to remove her to a foreign city in a neighboring country, many miles away from what she loved. She is hired (no pay) out to a rich household run by servants to function as amusement for a paralyzed daughter of a mostly absent father. The fact that she is much younger than the patient and has not had any schooling is not considered while she is ordered to attend homeschooling 8 grades above her skill level. She is treated as a lowly servant and expected to show gratitude above all.

It goes on and on until the little girl is so homesick that her health is threatened and she is shipped back home. I cried and ached for her just as I did 67 years ago when I promised myself to never let anyone abuse me or patronize me no matter how rich or important they are.

Information is just scattered everywhere. The history of Africa is complex and beautiful; it is a daunting task to attempt to put so much information in 1 book. I feel perhaps instead of making different sections in the book, Isichei may have been better off making multiple books detailing the history of Africa and its regions.

Finally, the Truth About Adulthood

The book may not be a page-turner, about which some people seem to be complaining, but its premise couldn't be more profound: "Adulthood" is not a fixed definition by which to judge ourselves, but an ever-changing, highly diverse set of life experiences that varies from person to person, culture to culture, and century to century. To judge any adult life by today's conservative definition of "marriage, family and work" is both damaging and extremely limiting, an observation which Mintz's facts make abundantly clear. More importantly, to use this narrow-minded definition as "...a yardstick by which all trends and social movements are measured [suggests] not just an unhealthy romanticizing of that era but a collective aversion to cultural complexity - one that affects everything from national policy to individual self-esteem." These are not my words, but Meghan Daum's, in her review of the book in the New York Times. I couldn't have said it better myself.

Chronicling Four Hundred Years of American Family Life

THE PRIME OF LIFE covers an ambitious canvas, as it tries to tell the story of the socially-produced concept of adulthood from the seventeenth century to the present. Through a series of elegantly researched chapters, Mintz focuses on different aspects of the topic, including adolescence, young adulthood, marriage, alternatives to marriage, family life, different constructions of family, and the ways in which human beings have coped with the wok/leisure divide.

And yet the book remains something of a disappointment. Perhaps this is due to the familiarity of the subject-matter: many of the topics covered in THE PRIME OF LIFE have been covered by authors past and present in a form of discourse far more lively than Mintz's rather pedestrian prose. Sometimes it feels as if he has sacrificed originality for comprehensiveness; by trying to cover four hundred years of family life in three hundred pages, he summons up a wealth of evidence but remains short on analysis.

Perhaps the disappointment is also due to a certain degree of cross-cultural myopia. Although specifically focused on American family life, Mintz could have made more comparisons with other countries - not just Great Britain, but other European and Asian nations as well. Sometimes his claims to uniqueness about American family life seem rather hollow; many of the elements he identifies are common to families worldwide.

Or maybe it's just because of the conclusion - after three hundred pages of closely-worded argument, he advises those in late maturity to set aside their problems and look instead at the positive sides of their lives; their ability to make sense of the world through experience, and their feeling that they have achieved something. This advice seems banal, to say the least; many adults have neither the time nor the opportunity to make such reflections, as they struggle to survive in economically stringent times. Even if we do have the capacity to reflect, perhaps we should be looking for new possibilties; in other words, rediscovering our childlike capacity for wonder, rather than trusting in our experience.

THE PRIME OF LIFE is a good dipping-book but rather a tiresome read as a whole.

Just what the doctor ordered.

This has got to be one of the most useful products I have ordered to learn Russian. I live in Russia and the language hasn't been as kind to me as some of the other ones. This book is great, because it gives you a lot of useful vocabulary. It also has parallel texts. It covers a lot of material. I can't imagine someone not getting a lot out of this book. It is a steal for around 9 bucks.

Wonderful Book : The Best Intermediate Language Book Ever

I can't praise this book enough : It is magnificent, combining an entertaining story line with excellent, lively, naturally colloquial language which, with its parallel Russian-English format , allows advanced beginners and intermediate learners alike to quickly and painlessly take giant steps to improve their practical knowledge of Russian . I wish this type of book and format existed for every language -- In fact, I wish there were several different volumes of it for Russian alone: I think I'd buy every one. The quantity of material provided , as a previous reviewer mentioned, is awesome, too. This is an intermediate level language learner's dream come true--As they say in Russian : Kak nel'zya luchshe -- You just couldn't do this any better!
Like others, I had problems with a beginning version of this series, which for some strange reason used very unusual language in several instances---but there is no trace of the problems that existed with that book here. With this book, the author ( perhaps because the other book was the joint creation of several people, and he was on his own this time ) has created a real masterpiece, a book which I think ( based on something like 50 years' worth of language learning , work and teaching at all levels ) is the absolute , unequaled best of its kind. If you've studied a year or two of Russian and want to make giant strides forward ( while being totally entertained at the same time) , do not pass up this book ---and even if you're an advanced student of the language ( or a Russian speaker seeking to improve your English ), this book can do wonders for you, too. In summation, I know it's not original , but I can only second what the first reviewer wrote above: BRAVO to the author of this wonderful book ---- the best ever!^^^

Excellent for Beginner and early Intermediate

I am very pleased with the construction of this book. The vocabulary consists of commonly used words and phrases, and the interesting stories further reinforce the vocabulary in sentences with different grammatical constructions. For those at the Beginning to Intermediate level, I heartily recommend this book.
