If The Machine That Changed the World is a description of the Toyota system in the industry of its origin, Lean Thinking is a generalization of the basic concepts so they can be applied to any company in any industry. (The first part of Lean Thinking devotes a chapter to each of these principles.) In the second part, the authors describe in detail how managers in a wide range of companies and industries - small, medium and large, North American, European and Japanese - transformed their business by applying the principles of lean thinking. Chapters are devoted to Pratt and Whitney, Wiremold, Lantech in North America, Porsche in Germany, and Showa Manufacturing in Japan. Lean Thinking has sold more than 300,000 copies in the English language hard-cover version alone, because it's an indispensable companion for every manager making the lean journey.

There's a missionary zeal to this book for corporate managers: it wants to convert companies the world over to the streamlined production process pioneered by Toyota after WWII. Womack and Jones chronicled Toyota's concept of lean production in The Machine That Changed the World, and embarked in 1990 on a tour of North America, Europe and Japan to persuade organizations, managers, employers and investors that mass production was out of date and should be chucked for something better. They formed a network of companies and individuals dedicated to lean production. Network members, whose stories form the basis of the book, gather annually to update procedures and refine theory. Showa Manufacturing, a Japanese maker of radiators and boilers, for instance, pulled itself out of an earnings slump by changing from mass-producing batches of standardized equipment to producing customized small lots. Heavily laden with details, this is for specialists who want to streamline. It makes few references to the larger, global economy. Author tour.

In The Machine That Changed the World (1990), Womack and Jones, along with Daniel Roos, lauded the manufacturing technique used by Japanese automakers, known as "lean production" and also as the Toyota Production System. Lately, though, some critics have argued that "lean production" has been used as simply an excuse for downsizing, and recent books, such as David Gordon's Fat and Mean (1996), have questioned whether corporate trimming has been effective at all. Undaunted, Womack and Jones argue their case anew. They now move beyond "lean production" to propose "the lean enterprise" and describe the successes at 25 U.S., Japanese, and German companies that have effectively implemented the "lean principles" of value (as defined by the customer), value stream, flow, pull, and perfection. Good Conceptual Overview of Eliminating Waste in Producing

Unlike most cost-reduction books, Lean Thinking has a strong conceptual underpinning for thinking about improving your operations. The authors move beyond the narrowest application of the lean manufacturing model (the original Toyota system) to explore key concepts like value (what do the customers want? as opposed to what do they choose from the limited options we give them?), flow (continuous production is faster and more efficient than batch processing), pull (letting immediate demand determine what is produced rather than sales projections), and perfection (thinking through the ideal way to do things, rather than just improving from where you are today somewhat). Providing this conceptual framework makes it easier to understand the benefits of operating a lean enterprise. People who did not understand the message in Direct from Dell would find Lean Thinking to be a useful framework.
One of the strengths of this book is that it is deliberately full of examples of companies which took traditional methods in existing plants and converted them into lean operations. I know of no other set of case histories half as useful on this subject.
The key limitation of this book is that most people new to lean manufacturing would not be able to implement solely using the book as a guide. The conceptual perspective, while being uniquely valuable, leaves the inexperienced person with few guideposts. Some of the key requirements are simply described as "get the knowledge" and so forth. As a follow-up, I suggest that the authors team with those who have done this work and write a hands-on guide. Much more benefit will follow.
If you are interested in understanding how a new business model of how to provide your products and/or services might work and what the benefits might be, Lean Thinking is a good place to start. Most executives and operations managers have never seriously considered going from batch to cell-based production. This will open your eyes to the potential.
Based on my many years of experience with improving business processes, you will actually need to go visit some of the companies cited to fully understand the issues and what must be done. I know that visits to Pratt & Whitney can be arranged and are very insightful. You might try to start with that one.
One area may turn you off. The cited examples moved forward pretty ruthlessly. That may not be your cup of tea. You may be reminded of some of the early reengineering. My own experience is that such changes can be done in a more positive and constructive way. Stay open to that possibility as you read the cases. They basically all use command and control to create more flexibility. You can also use other methods like those encouraged in The Soul at Work and The Living Company to create these kinds of results. Keep that in mind.
I recommend that everyone who uses batch and sequential operation methods read this book. It will open your eyes to great potential to grow faster and more profitably.

Good Book for Introduction to Lean!..need application book

This book was definately informative. Lean thinking is revolutionary in approach. The text reviews a lot of success stories. Would like to see another text that gets more into application, answering questions like...How to set up a kanban system..or How to accomplish quick changeover of machinery.
Would recommend this book as a good starting point!

Great Ideas, But Now How?

Lean Thinking does an excellent job of detailing what is wrong with the standard business processes in North America and pretty much the rest of the world. The authors also do a very good job of introducing (I hadn't yet read The Machine that Changed the World) and explaining their ideas to make clear that there is a much better way available to companies.
I have long been a big believer that all employees are valuable resources that are all to often wasted due to 'right sizing' efforts to achieve immediate monetary targets. Lean Thinking has total employee involvement as a basic pillar of the theory.
The business examples they provide are bulletproof, and definitely make the case that what they suggest can be done.
The problems I had with the book had to do with credibly backing up many of the claims the authors make, like " quality always zooms when flow and pull thinking are put in place together." Is there any hard evidence to back up this assertion? Not in the book. The authors make many guarantees about eye-popping improvements their theory will bring if it is implemented correctly.
Implementation is where I have the biggest problem with this book. Womack and Jones certainly do a good job of explaining their theory and backing it up with impeccable examples, but it all adds up to another book in which the authors tell you what you HAVE to do, but not how to do it. It is my opinion that made yet another contribution to the Knowing-Doing Gap (Pfeffer and Sutton, HBS Press 2000). The great ideas contained in the book lack any real, concrete action steps for successful implementation and so will rarely be successfully implemented.
It is similar to all of the talk about innovation. Everyone knows that it is important to do it, but few actually do it because they don't know how. It's not as simple as snapping your fingers. How do you actually go about involving all of your employees? I myself would involve the Simplex process (1995, The Power of Innovation, M.S. Basadur), but that's just me. The same logic applies to almost every section of the last third of the book. I kept saying to myself, "Wow, that's easier said than done."
The book leaves it to the reader to essentially make it up for themselves to make lean thinking a reality in their organization.
I realize that it would be impossible to provide a step-by-step action plan that would fit any company or situation, but the authors could have done more than offer "Find a change agent." Gee, thanks for the tip! By the end of the book I realized why the implementation side of the book was so thin - the book is a marketing tool for the authors and their associates. Near the end of the book the reader is told to get a sensei, and hey, there happen to be alot of them in Japan you can hire! Also, we, the authors, do speaking engagements if you want to hire us!
The book is definitely a worthwhile read, as it does open the eyes to the reader of a better way of operating, how far away we currently are from it, and how we are all affected by it.

Dear Readers,

Yesterday, The New York Times reported that the world's #1 restaurant Noma planned to shift to a vegetarian menu for half the year.

While many seemed surprised or even shocked, we weren't.  Less than a year ago, celebrated chef Joel Robuchon had declared that vegetarianism is the cuisine of the coming decade -- and we've seen scores of other leading chefs moving in that direction, through reducing meat on their menus (e.g., Dan Barber, Alain Ducasse) and/or offering vegetarian and even vegan tasting menus (e.g., Daniel Boulud, Daniel Humm, Thomas Keller, Patrick O'Connell). 

There are countless reasons that professional chefs and home cooks alike will want to learn more about cooking meatless meals.  And we have poured our hearts into creating just the resource for you:  THE VEGETARIAN FLAVOR BIBLE.  In January of this year, the Los Angeles Times reported that EatYourBooks.com ranked it "The #5 Cookbook of 2014."

but The Flavor Bible is the most useful book in my kitchen

I am NOT a vegetarian, but The Flavor Bible is the most useful book in my kitchen, so as soon as I heard about The Vegetarian Flavor Bible I ordered it. It's hard to believe that it is even bigger and even better than the original. I'm very happy to have it as a guide to cooking with vegetables, grains, beans, mushrooms, and much more.

I have ordered one for all of my friends as gifts this year.

The photo's are beautiful and the presentation is more like a tabletop book than a cookbook.

Great Resource Cooking Book

I never know what herb goes with what vegetable and since I'm on a whole food, plant based way of life, it's important to make vegetables taste fantastic. This book fits that bill so much. I like the book better than getting on the internet because it's more concise and you don't have to wade through thousands of sites. There are also some great recipes that I can tailor to my diet.

This book pursues a comprehensive approach so as to arrive at a better understanding of the implications of climate change on sustainable development, focusing on the perspective of water. Climate change is one of today’s most pressing global issues and will become increasingly important in the decades to come, as societies will feel its pervasive impacts in many aspects of their lives. Given that the majority of these climate change impacts will be felt through the medium of water, the book explores the interrelationships and inter-linkages between water, climate change and sustainable development.

About the Author
Prof. Asit K. Biswas is the founder of the Third World Centre for Water Management in Mexico, and currently is the Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy in Singapore, University of Wuhan, China, and Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, India. Formerly a Professor in UK, Canada and Sweden, he was a member of the World Commission on Water. He has been a senior advisor to 19 governments, six Heads of the United Agencies, Secretary General of OECD and also to many other major international and national organisations. He is a Past President of the International Water Resources Association, and has held important positions in several major international water and environment‐related professional associations. Prof. Biswas is the founder of the International Journal of Water Resources Development and has been its Editor‐in‐Chief for the past 28 years. He has been the author or editor of 81 books (6 more are now under publication) and published over 680 scientific and technical papers. His work has now been translated into 37 languages. Among his numerous prizes are the two highest awards of the International Water Resources Association (Crystal Drop and Millennium Awards), Walter Huber Award of the American Society of Civil Engineering and Honorary Degree of Doctor of Technology from University of Lund, Sweden, and Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Science from University of Strathclyde, Helsinki University of Technology, and Indian Institute of Technology. Prof. Biswas received the Stockholm Water Prize in 2006 for “his outstanding and multi‐faceted contributions to global water resource issues”, as well as the Man of the Year Award from Prime Minister Harper of Canada, and the Aragon Environment Prize of Spain. In 2012, he was named a “Water Hero of the World” by the Impeller Magazine, and also as one of the 10 thought‐leaders of the world in water by Reuters. He is a member of the Global Agenda Council on Water Security of the World Economic Forum. He is regular contributor to many national and international newspapers on resource and development related issues and also is a television commentator in three continents.
Dr. Cecilia Tortajada is President of the International Water Resources Association; Scientific Director of the International Centre on Water and Environment, Zaragoza, Spain; former Visiting Professor of the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy, Singapore; and Vice President of the Third World Centre for Water Management. She has been an advisor to major international institutions like FAO, UNDP, CDG, InWEnt, and the governments of Cameroon, India, Turkey, and Republic of Congo on various aspects of water resources and environmental management and governance-related issues. She is currently working on formulation of national and international policies for water governance; management of future global environmental and water-related issues; development of innovative approaches for poverty alleviation through regional development; and capacity building in the water sector. She is the Editor of the International Journal of Water Resources�Development, and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Natural Resources Policy Research.

1.) The eBay Profit Calculator™ - This is a very user-friendly program which allows you to simply plug in 3 values that you know - Your initial purchase price of the item, how much it will cost to ship the item, and any "listing fees" (which are usually $0 if you do not use any advanced auction features). From there, a mathematical algorithm calculates the exact "breakeven point" that you must list your item for in order to start turning a profit. Any amount greater than the "breakeven number" will result in a guaranteed profit after the transaction is complete and all expenses are paid. In short, the program guarantees that every item you sell results in a monetary gain.

2.) Income vs. Expense spreadsheet - This spreadsheet is also a very user-friendly program which allows you keep track of all income that you make (your "net profit" number as determined by the eBay Profit Calculator™) and expenses (packaging materials, printer ink, paper, etc.). You simply enter in the net profit that you make on every sale and any expense items that you purchased during the month that are related to your eBay business. The program then sums up all income and expenses and takes the difference between the two. That number is you "monthly profit". In other words, that is exactly how much profit you made in any given month from your eBay business.

Great resource, endless applications

This book is a must-have for anyone who considers themselves beyond an entry-level carpenter. A lot of the ideas, tips, and theories in the book build upon common practices, and most of the projects are a little more advanced than hanging a shelf. The book covers everything from planning the site for a new construction, to framing the walls and roof, installing siding and shingles, etc. But even as a first-timer, there is plenty of knowledge in this book for you.
My usage for this book has mostly been for cutting rafters, both on a jobsite and for a shed I just built. This book gives you detailed instructions for measuring and cutting rafters without getting into the painful details of a beginner's guide to carpentry. I was able to calculate everything quickly and precisely, and there was even a guide on how to build a time-saving template to lay out your rafters identically.
This is the 2nd time I have bought this book- I loaned my first copy to a coworker who didn't want to give it back! I told him Merry Christmas and bought another copy for myself. John Carroll definitely knows what he is talking about, and I appreciate his writing style.
For the record, I am a licensed residential contractor with 10 years of experience, and I still found this book helpful. This was not written so advanced that the beginner won't understand- I think it is very clear and concise, and will give people a better understanding of the more technical side of the job.

Solid from the ground up.

I wish I'd had this book a long time ago. Granted, a lot of the knowledge and practice in here is stuff you will pick up on the job-site, but probably some time after you could've used it. After a brief introduction, the author follows the construction process from foundation to roof, providing a wealth of mistake saving and even mistake correcting information. Confidence is essential to planning, executing and efficiently completing any project and this book delivers just that. It should be considered absolutely essential for those seeking to become proficient builders, whether professional or not. If I believed in employees, I'd make sure they all had a copy and I'd pay them to read it. The basics of tool selection and use, practical accuracy, and formulas are included with a lot of tips, tricks and explanations. I intend to make this book mandatory reading for my sons, it will save me a lot of time teaching, and save them a few years of correcting blunders.

A benchmark for the way "how to" books should be written. Clear and well illustrated. Probably should be considered a foundation (no pun intended) book for your home improvement library. Measuring, marking, and laying out correctly save you time, material which equals money and less frustration.

If you want to use concrete5 you need to read this

So first a little background. I am a developer of two years who started specializing in concrete5 last year. The docs to concrete5 are fantastic and I was up and running in no time. I was walking around thinking I was playing in the big leagues. Then I read this book......Holy monkey shines batman!

If you are going to use C5 (and you should) you need to read this. The guy who wrote is is one of the most active members of the concrete5 community (Remo). His understanding of the system is vast and because of all the time he spends answering forum questions he has a very easy to follow explanation style. This isn't your fathers book on Computer Science theory, get ready to roll up your sleeves, grab a wrench and get ready to get dirty!

Example: I was on a 13 hour train ride form Adirondacks to DC and thought I would just finish up a site i was working on (I had not yet read the book) I needed to set up a section of the site that handled new customer registration/login and an advanced permission system. The trains Wifi was out so I cracked my C5 for beginners guide. I was finished with the whole permissions system with registration and login in less then 1 hour. I was shocked. So now it is my go to book.

If you work with C5 (again, you should) you need to read this book, whether you are a professional or DIY type this read will give you the basics that will let you soar.

So far, so Good.

Starts of with the necessary set-up to run concrete 5 - which anyone just experimenting wouldn't know. Originally, I downloaded Concrete 5 on a web server, and went to run it (thinking I would wiggle my way through it). And, of course, got stopped from the get go. Had to uninstall it, and buy this book. So far, this will get me past the first stage, anyhow. Hopefully, when things get up an running it will continue to answer those types of answers.

This book is a must have for anyone starting to use Concrete5 CMS.
The CMS is a really powerful tool but this book gives you so many great methods of getting more out of it.
The writer explains things in easy to understand ways and uses real world examples. By the end of the book you can easily have a up and running website that you have full control over.
If your new to Concrete5 and want to get a good handle on it then this is the book for you.

Although it is called a 'Beginners Guide' you will need some basic HTML and CSS knowledge and a tiny bit of PHP, so it may not be for a total beginner with no experience at all.
Even if you don't have any knowledge you would probably still manage to get a lot out of the book.
