The Bramble Bush: The Classic Lectures on the Law and Law School, by Karl N Llewellyn

For over seventy years, there has been one book that law students have read to prepare for what they were about to encounter. That book is The Bramble Bush. After all these years and many imitators, The Bramble Bush remains one of the most popular introductions to the law and its study.

Llewellyn introduces students to what the law is, how to read cases, how to prepare for class, and how justice in the real world relates to the law. Although laws change every year, disputes between people haven't altered all that much since Llewellyn first penned The Bramble Bush, and the process of moving from private dispute to legal conflict still follows the patterns he described.

Moreover, the steps of a legal dispute, from arguments to verdict, to opinion, to review, to appeal, to opinion have changed little in their significance or their substance. Cases are still the best tools for exploring the interaction of the law with individual questions, and the essence of what law students must learn to do has persisted. If anything, many of the points Llewellyn argued in these lectures were on the dawning horizon then but are in their mid-day fullness now.

Review

"If you have any doubt about your level of skill, interest, or readiness to study the law, purchase and read a copy of The Bramble Bush-The Classic Lectures on the Law and Law School, now updated and published anew in 2008 by Oxford University Press. Law school is a bramble bush. You need to prepare yourself for the reality of its experience. [Llewellyn's] The Bramble Bush offers rich and nuanced answers to questions about what the law is, the case system, the nature of law school, and your legal studies beyond the first year. You will greatly benefit if you let Professor Llewellyn (with Professor Sheppard's essential assistance) take you by the hand for this journey."

--Brad Dobeck, President, PrelawAdvisor.com

"Karl Llewellyn was one of the greatest legal minds of the twentieth century, and The Bramble Bush is one of his classics-illuminating and even indispensable reading for each generation of law students and lawyers, and wonderful for general readers as well." -- Cass R. Sunstein, Karl N. Llewellyn Distinguished Service Professor, The University of Chicago Law School

"...one of the greatest works ever written on the nature of law and legal education. In a sometimes sharp, sometime whimsical, always brilliant analysis, Llewellyn offers invaluable insights to anyone contemplating the study of law." -- Geoffrey Stone, Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor, The University of Chicago Law School

"The Bramble Bush reads to me today as it read to me three decades ago as a law student: fresh, brassy, irreverent, impudent, and brilliant. To suggest that the study of law should focus on how and why judges and officials and lawyers in the real world actually behave in our legal system! To suggest that law is not simply an arid matrix of rules and theories and principles! The nerve! In this time in the history of legal education in which law schools are reinventing themselves, we would all do well to read The Bramble Bush again and again." --Rodney A. Smolla, Dean and Professor of Law, Washington and Lee University School of Law

This book is so hard to keep up with and made not one bit of sense to me. It just seemed like he was rambling. I've never had this much trouble getting through one book. If it wasn't required, I would've tossed it after reading the first few pages.

Great Insights into Legal Education and Practice
By Edward J. Barton
Read it, then gave it to my 13 year old daughter to keep, since she's thinking about law school. A good read for the 1L or pre-law on the limits and challenges of legal education and practice. Well worth the read, nearly 100 years later. A time tested classic.

The Cartoon History of the Universe III: From the Rise of Arabia to the Renaissance (Cartoon History of the Modern World), by Larry Gonick

An irreverent survey in comics spanning world history from the birth of Islam to the Byzantine Empire to the Italian Renaissance.

Larry Gonick's celebrated series The Cartoon History of the Universe is a unique fusion of world history and the comics medium, a work of serious scholarship and a masterpiece of popular literature. Praised by Jonathan Spence in the New York Times Book Review as "a curious hybrid, at once flippant and scholarly, witty and politically correct, zany and traditionalist," Gonick's clever illustrations deliver important information with a deceptively light tone, teaching us about the people and events that have shaped our world. This long-awaited new volume covers the Middle Ages around the globe, including the multicultural Middle East, West Africa and the cross-Saharan trade, Central Asia and the Byzantine Empire, the European Dark Ages and the Crusades, the Mongol conquests, the Black Death, the Ottoman Empire, the Italian Renaissance, and the rise of Spain, leading up to Columbus's departure for the new world. Gonick offers an historical survey that is at once multicultural, humanistic, skeptical, and laugh-out-loud funny.

From Publishers Weekly
The second volume of Gonick's deeply researched, lucid and hilarious overview of history was published eight years ago. Good things take time, evidently. This third installment begins in the year 395, with the closing of Europe's pagan temples, and ends in 1492, with Columbus and crew setting sail. Readers get an overview of nearly everything that occurred between those two events, from the origins of Islam to the great Chinese dynasties and the Crusades, with "flashbacks" to the rise of African culture, the Turco-Mongol tribes and more. Gonick's take on history is whip-smart, skeptical about familiar but questionable stories and absolutely in command of dozens of simultaneous historical threads. He's also very funny, even at his most respectful. (In the chapter on the life of Muhammad, for instance, he makes a running joke of keeping the prophet permanently off-panel.) Gonick is fond of wacky little digressions, and the book includes plenty of learned slapstick (one ongoing gag concerns the "amazing amount of eye-gouging" in Byzantine history). The architecture and clothes in Gonick's work are drawn with convincing realism, but the people are broad, goofy caricatures, which somehow makes the entire presentation even friendlier: in fact, the author employs a handful of walk-ons disheveled, mustachioed academic types to explain the more complicated points.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This clever, wickedly funny book begins with the birth of Islam, steps back for an overview of the history of Africa, jumps to Turkey and China, peeks at the Dark Ages in Europe, heads back to the Middle East for the Crusades, and wraps up with Christopher Columbus heading west. Gonick has a knack for finding intriguing bits of history that tend to be overlooked in conventional texts and reporting them with irreverent humor, as with the story of the group of Meccans who visited a cathedral in Ethiopia and left an unusual calling card. ("&*%$# pagans pooped in my church!" the king complains to the Islamic missionaries.) The book is a mixture of careful research and quips, often dwelling on the irony of people's actions versus their stated beliefs. The black-and-white art is energetic, sometimes spare, but generally evocative of time and place. Highly entertaining.

From Library Journal
Gonick is a veritable industry, having produced cartoon guides to such wide-ranging subjects as physics, sex, U.S. history, and two previous collections of his Cartoon History of the Universe. His work combines extensive research with two excellent teaching tools: pictures and humor. This volume begins with the founding of Islam in the early 600s and ends with Columbus's departure from Spain in 1492. In addition to covering Charlemagne, the Battle of Hastings, the Crusades, and Joan of Arc, it takes in much that is less widely known in America, including histories of the Byzantine Empire, the Turks, India, and more. Though this volume is not as funny as the previous two, Gonick maintains a light tone throughout the unending cycles of invasion, social decay, and religious warfare. As the title suggests, Gonick's figures are cartoony, but his renderings of ancient art and architecture are detailed and realistic. A long, annotated bibliography rounds out the book. The frank nature of Gonick's comments (and jokes) relating to sex make this for adult collections. An excellent example of the educative potential of comics, this history is highly recommended.

Funny and Intelligent, but a bit rushed
By Robert Hlozek
Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe III, is a wonderful read. His humor is sharper than ever, or perhaps humanity just got more ridiculous with age. Whatever the reason it's still the most amusing history book you'll ever read. This book unfortunately does feel a bit rushed. Plenty of time is given to the rise of Islam and the decline of the Byzantine/"Roman" Empire, while some other events in Southeast Asia were overlooked as is history in North and South America (however some South American history is covered in the next volume, The Cartoon History of the Modern World Part 1: From Columbus to the U.S. Constitution (Pt. 1)). However, that's really a minor complaint, as Gonick crams nearly 800 years of world history in 300 pages and for the most part does a damn fine job. So for any history buffs, comic book fans, or pseudo intellectuals consider this book a must own.

Excellent survey of history
By Ed S.
Larry Gonick's Cartoon History of the Universe (three volumes) is great stuff. He does an incredible job of distilling down history into easily readable chapters, not omitting Eastern history. Way more approachable and interesting for young (and not-so-young) adults, his books are prominent on my extensive history bookshelves. Worth reading! (Even the bibliographies at the end are worth looking through)

Loving Larry's stuff since the dawn of time!
By Lady Bluehawk
Awesome stuff, as always! I'll probably have to get the other books in the sequence, too, like The Cartoon History of the Modern World Part 1: From Columbus to the U.S. Constitution (Pt. 1) and The Cartoon History of the Modern World, Part 2: From the Bastille to Baghdad, but it'll be worth it. :)

Build a foundation in basic magic.
By John M. Lowe
Picture Yourself As a Magician by Wayne N. Kawamoto (2008) is a beginner's book on magic.

Best Features: (1) This book is profusely illustrated with full color photos. (2) Contemporary props make new effects, such as iPod magic, possible for the first time. (3) The book itself is used as a prop for four of the effects: "The World's Best Card Trick," "Picture Yourself as a Magician - Revelation 2," "The Clock," and "The Mind Reader." (4) A DVD filled with demos and lessons is included inside the back cover of the book. The lessons include additional effects that are not taught in the book. One of the added effects is a cute sawing-a-woman-in-half trick that can be done close-up with homemade props.

I hope you like card tricks because six of the fourteen chapters in this book are devoted to card magic. In addition, several of the remaining chapters in the book include one or more card tricks in them. For example, the chapter on "Mind Reading and Future Predictions" includes an effect with a gimmicked deck of cards. The chapter on "Stand-Up and Stage Magic" includes a pick-a-card trick that uses a giant playing card as a prop. The chapter on "Magic for the Street" contains four card tricks: "The Mysterious Kiss," "Card to Wallet," "Card on Wall," and "Card Monte." The chapter on "Party Magic" includes two card tricks: "The Red Card" and "Touch a Card." The chapter on "Electronic Magic with iPods" incorporates two card tricks: "Card Detector" and "Card Transporter."

The amount of space given to card magic does not go to waste. The diligent disciple of card magic will learn basic card handling and sleight-of-hand with cards (use of a key card, false cut, card force, cross-cut force, false shuffle, Hindu Shuffle, double undercut) along with some great card tricks, such as, "The Rising Card," "Do As I Do," "Lost and Found," and the "Ten-Card Poker Deal." You will also learn how to use trick decks (Svengali Deck & Stripper Deck) in the correct manner.

My Favorite Chapter: I especially liked Chapter 12 on Levitation. Three different levitations are described ("The Balducci Levitation," "The Jacket Levitation," and "The Box Levitation"), all three of which are suitable for the street and can be done outdoors.

My Favorite Quote: "It's the experience that truly burnishes a routine."

My Only Gripe: The DVD was unexpectedly glued to the pocket that encased it. I had to find a solvent that would remove the sticky residue from the DVD's front, back, and edge. WD-40 to the rescue!

The Lie That Tells a Truth: A Guide to Writing Fiction, by John Dufresne

"This is the most practical, hard-nosed, generous, direct, and useful guide to writing fiction."―Brad Watson

Finally, a truly creative―and hilarious―guide to creative writing, full of encouragement and sound advice. Provocative and reassuring, nurturing and wise, The Lie That Tells a Truth is essential to writers in general, fiction writers in particular, beginning writers, serious writers, and anyone facing a blank page.

John Dufresne, teacher and the acclaimed author of Love Warps the Mind a Little and Deep in the Shade of Paradise, demystifies the writing process. Drawing upon the wisdom of literature's great craftsmen, Dufresne's lucid essays and diverse exercises initiate the reader into the tools, processes, and techniques of writing: inventing compelling characters, developing a voice, creating a sense of place, editing your own words. Where do great ideas come from? How do we recognize them? How can language capture them? In his signature comic voice, Dufresne answers these questions and more in chapters such as "Writing Around the Block," "Plottery," and "The Art of Abbreviation." Dufresne demystifies the writing process, showing that while the idea of writing may be overwhelming, the act of writing is simplicity itself.

From Publishers Weekly
A novelist and teacher, Dufresne (Deep in the Shade of Paradise) shares his blunt views on writing in this instruction book, which draws heavily on the tenets of realist fiction and method acting. Divided into two main sections-"The Process" focuses on habits and emotions; "The Product" emphasizes narrative mechanics-Dufresne's manual often adopts the tone of a fiery professor advising a group of wide-eyed young freshmen. "Fiction writing is arrested development," he declares. "Just know that you should quit right now if you can." Readers may sometimes feel lectured by his many stern instructions-"Thou Shalt Not Be Obscure," "Thou Shalt Show and Not Tell," "Thou Shalt Steal"-but the author hits his stride when he covers the mechanics of story. Particularly valuable is his advice on choosing character names, occupations, and points of view. A principle of acting teachers Konstantin Stanislavsky and Michael Chekhov-that exterior movement leads to interior feeling-forms the basis of one of Defresne's two chapters on characterization. Elsewhere, he skillfully analyzes the work of his favorite writers Anton Chekhov, Frank O'Connor and Eudora Welty. (Dufresne also mines his own work for examples of process and technique.) Each chapter closes with a set of writing exercises. Although this volume is unlikely to displace classic fiction guides like E.M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel, many readers may respond to the author's encouraging, exhorting tone.

From Booklist
Like so many writers' guides, this one talks about creating a character, finding an idea, constructing a plot, and the rest of it. It does all of that quite well, too, but what makes it stand out in this popular genre is its tone and approach. Novelist Dufresne, the author of Deep in the Shade of Paradise (2002), lays out the storytelling process clearly and simply. "Fiction is telling the truth, not telling the facts." His tone is light, amiable, conversational: a professional storyteller talking to someone who wants to be a professional storyteller. Writing, he tells us, is about trusting our feelings, about describing the essence of a scene without getting bogged down in irrelevant details. Peppering his text with inspirational and instructional quotes from a variety of writers (Joseph Heller: "Every writer I know has trouble writing"), Dufresne delivers a book that is both a tremendous inspiration to novice writers struggling with their craft and a useful guide to the technical aspects of turning words into stories. I'm in love with this book
By Robert Graves
John Dufresne's "The Lie That Tells A Truth" is one of the best books on writing that I own, rivaling even Steven King's "On Writing." From the start, TLTTAT gets you writing, the most obvious and ironically overlooked aspect of being a writer.
The introduction starts, "I'll assume that if you're reading this introduction, then you must want to write. Why else would you be loitering around the Writing/Publishing section of the bookstore when all the really interesting and dangerous people are over in the Self-Help/Addiction aisle?" The book is laden with a self-aware humor, knowing writers are in a desperate state, completely miserable when they are not writing yet so prone to finding other things to fill their time.
TLTTAT is divided into three main sections that logically break the writing process down. The first section, "The Process," covers the basics of getting it in gear and writing a story. He repeats again and again that a writer writes, and if you're not writing every day then you are "inviting madness." I could relate to this deeply. There's nothing more frustrating than wanting to write but for some reason not doing it. Dufresne's solution is simple - just do it. And he gives you plenty of exercises to get you going. In this first section he also discusses rewriting, clearly driving the point home that rewriting is the essence of writing. In fact, he's able to show, in what might be the only book I know of that does this, the real process of writing a novel or screenplay or short story or poem, or any work of creativity. He tells you to disallow your critical self to sit down at the desk with you while writing the first draft, to write from the heart. Get to know your characters and then allow them to lead you through their story (and he provides exercises to encourage this). Then, discussing the revision process, he specifically outlines several steps you can take to produce stronger writing, such as eliminating adverbs, eliminating most adjectives, avoiding the passive voice. These things may seem obvious, but he presents them in a lucid way, with actual examples of revision, that will improve your overall writing quality.
The second section deals with the specifics of plot development, dialogue, character growth, point of view, beginnings and endings, and settings. Taking what you know from how the writing of a story actually occurs (from the first section) you now learn the mechanics of developing that story.
The last section is primarily about how to glean the most from the work of others.
I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you are an aspiring writer, buy this book today, along with Steven King's "On Writing" and Linda Seger's "Making a Good Writer Great." In a library full of writing books, "The Lie That Tells a Truth" shines brightly.

A great teacher
By Lazyboy
I procrastinated writing this review for weeks because it meant so much to me.
The great gift this book offers is its infinite passion for writing. You feel it from the author and from all the great authors whose quotes are included. Being immersed in this love of literature for the time it took me to read and reread this book was a pleasure.
The book also provides great insights into creating characters, starting stories, writing dialogue, "borrowing from other writers", and common mistakes made by authors.
The following two points helped me the most. First, don't be discouraged by flawed first drafts and scenes that don't match the images you had in your head when you decided to write them. All writers experience this. Rewriting is where the magic occurs.
Second, only include writing that advances the story or reveals something important about the charactor. No matter how much you love a scene you wrote, remove it if it doesn't meet this criteria.
I can't recommend this book enough.

A Rich Resource for Teachers and Students of All Levels
By Heather G. Salerno
The Lie That Tells a Truth: A Guide to Writing Fiction is a rich resource for teachers of any fiction course (high school to graduate level), aspiring writers, or veteran writers seeking inspiration or the decadal refresher. Regardless of level or need, Dufresne has something for everyone. He covers the gamut, from the creative writing process (freewriting, first drafts, the habit of writing, your writing room, etc.) to the fundamentals of story craft (plot, dialogue, character, etc.).

There are three main parts: Process, Product, and Other Matters. Process addresses every obstacle an aspiring writer faces, from finding time to write to revising for clichs. Many points in this section bear mentioning, but I'll limit it to a few: Dufresne suggests harvesting material for stories from your own life, while minding the ethics of such theft (His mantra: First do no harm). He also notes that expecting too much from a first draft is a common beginning writer's mistake. And finally he prompts the writer to see, "to look at (the world) an inch at a time," so that our writing can light up with such details. In the Product section, Dufresne tackles the elements of craft. His chapters flow from openings/endings to plot to character to dialogue. In the section, The Queen Died of Grief, Dufresne explains the difference between a story and a plot, championing that a plot contains cause and effect, while story, in its rawest form, is simply news. And finally, in Other Matters, Dufresne discusses the necessity of writers to be readers and suggests that writers begin compiling catalogues (Sears, office supplies, lingerie, etc.) for imagining setting and details in your stories.

What makes this guide unique is Dufresne's voice, tone, and candor. He exposes his life and his writing mishaps in an attempt to demystify the writing process. For example, in the chapter titled, Doing It Again (And Again [And Again]), during a list of inspirational revision tips, Dufresne breaks the prose to write, "(I just wrote two lines here, and then I took them out. Here they are [or were]: Visualize your characters..." Dufresne goes on to share a long, nonsensical, and clunky sentence. By giving us his raw revision, we see it in contrast to his inspirational prose and the point of revision is hammered home. The guide is practical and straightforward, peppered by thought-provoking quotes by fiction greats. Dufresne diffuses the reader's writing fears by offering systematic advice for every possible writing obstacle or blunder. And at the end of each chapter there are exercises that reinforce the chapter's lesson.

Some quotable/referenceable moments: "The worst thing you can do in writing a first draft is to let your critical self (the boss) sit down at the writing table with your creative self" (page 72). Later, when discussing revision, Dufresne offers 15 editing/polishing tips on pages 87 through 90, including Challenge every adjective, Challenge the first and last paragraph, Cut every nonessential dialogue tag, and Challenge every line that you love.

The greatest strength of this guide is Dufresne's view of the first draft. In the brilliant section, Getting Black on White, he argues that the true first draft is the exploratory/discovery draft. Here the author is painting the set, from the rug to the roof. Dufresne suggests freewriting the set until the room is alive in your mind and on the paper. Then do the same for the characters. The first draft can go on for days, notebooks even, until the world you've created and its characters become clear. Dufresne writes of his first draft, "I answered the questions for days, writing away in my notebook" (page 74). The story you will start to tell in your second draft will be born of this first draft, but in the first draft there is no story yet. Here you are simply exploring.

As Breton might have fought with Greenberg, so might I fight with Dufresne. Dufresne subscribes to the freewriting school of thought, frowning on thoughtful plotting before the pen has met the page, or even after the first draft. It is not until many drafts into your story that Dufresne suggests you ask the story (page 85), "What is my story about?" While I plan on trying to leave the critic at home during my first draft, I think the content critic should creep in much sooner that Dufresne suggests. I am not sure this is a weakness of the guide, though, but rather a difference of opinion.

Urgency rating:

-Drop everything and read right now. Okay, well not right now, but definitely the next time you are stuck on a story, experiencing writer's block, or are just about to teach an introduction to fiction class. Then, yes--drop everything (unless you're carrying something fragile, like a baby or a melon.)

An Excellent Book!
By Janet S.
I was asked to review this book. I had assumed that given it was written for entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs (whatever that is), it would not be relevant to me, a senior researcher and budding book author. As I begun reading the first page and then found myself devouring the ones that followed, I was delighted to find that not only is the book totally relevant to me, but that I’m also one of these intrapreneurs! One of the key things that I personally got out of this book is how to evaluate, position, and present my ideas in a way that maximizes the likelihood that they will be supported, funded, or purchased—or whatever my goal is for presenting them in the first place. I’ve already recommended it to my entrepreneurial friends. I look forward to when the hard copy is available in the U.S. because this is book one that I will want to refer to again and again as well as give as a gift to a few of my friends.

Practical and Fun Guide for Making Your Vision Real
By KRP
Everyone has had the experience of sitting around (often over drinks) and having a moment of insight: wow, I just had a great idea! The issue of course is how to make that idea into a real business which adds value to the world and creates revenues over a sustained period of time. Lakkur and Alexander use real-life case studies, interviews and stories, combined with helpful worksheets and quality visuals to take you through the steps needed to go from idea to business. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to go past the brainstorming phase and really make a difference with a new business, or for any team already on that journey.

By Mark Faust
If you are a budding entrepreneur, if you are the slightest bit hesitant about making the leap into starting a new venture this is a great exhortation.

I will recommend this book to the many people I meet who need help organizing the ominous and intimidating task of getting that baby of an idea birthed.

Many great pieces of wisdom in here, e.g. one in particular is the must do initial step of nascent or rather unborn companies to go out and prove your concept by getting customers first. Too often people are so drunk on the beauty of their idea, they forget the basics of market research and skip this all important step.

From marketing, to negotiations, you'll be better positioned for success having read this book.

Oh and very well written.
