Discrete math for real software engineers

Software designs must address trade-offs among factors such as performance, usability, completeness, timeliness, correctness and so on. Judging from the number of bugs people encounter, software engineers seem to be trading away too much of the correctness factor for something else.
Hein's text addresses this issue by placing much greater emphasis on ideas from logic and methods of proof than most other books on discrete mathematics, such as the popular text by Rosen. In addition, Hein includes material relating important software concepts to abstract algebra, and he does this without slighting other common topics of discrete mathematics, such as sets, relations, functions, counting, automata, and computability. Software engineers who have learned from Hein's text will have practical tools that they can use to deal with the software correctness factor more effectively.
Besides all of these good qualities, the text is well organized, clearly written, and punctuated with deligtfully subtle humor. I plan to use it.

Deep, but overly dense

This book provides excellent coverage of logic and computability (I haven't really looked at the "Discrete Structures" component yet), but is often unnecessarily verbose in its explanations. It would work well in conjunction with a well-taught class, but not necessarily as good on its own.

Second Review of Dr. Hein's Book

Now, since I took two terms of classes that used Dr. Hein's book, I had internal urges to write emails to Dr. Hein and praise him for his book and his lab manual (but I never did wrote to him, though). Instead, I decided to write to a broader audience, here at Amazon. I found the book ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY, a Holistic Bible of Computer Logic so to speak, for every CS student. I have read and re-read the book and still reading it today, during the Summer Break. I scanned the whole book with a flatbed scanner because I needed to look things up often even as I studied other courses at Portland State University. I also highly recommend Dr. Hein's Prolog Lab Manual which guides you through the experiments designed to help understanding the Book's material. Marvelous Lab Manual, Dr. Hein! It is my opinion that Doctor Hein has a profound vision of where Computer Science is going and that's why he designed his Book and his lab manual this way. The Book and Lab Manual helped me tremendously to understand recursion and logic.
PS: I never write reviews of books, but this particular book have always prompted urges to praise it.

Greg F. Gifune: The High Priest of Horror

Let me start this review off by stating that I think Greg F. Gifune is one of the most brilliant writers of horror today. His voice is smooth, daring, vicious, poetic, and as imaginative as any writer working in this genre.

I had read The Bleeding Season, my first journey into the mind of Gifune, and was amazed. Next I read Drago Descending, and thought it was just as good; I would have liked to see that one longer, but it was still a fabulous read.

But I don't think anything could have prepared me for Children of Chaos. From the first page, Gifune's spell of magical writing swept over me like a seductive drug, and I finished the novel in one day-I also stayed up all night to finish it, it was that intense.

Imagine being young and living through one rainy night when you and your other two friends commit a terrible deed; one that will change the course of your lives from that moment on.

One friend grows up to be a priest who is eventually defrocked due to suspicious circumstances. The other, travels the world and eventually comes to reside far away in a desert hellhole, surrounded by hundreds of psychotic followers who will do anything for him, because they believe he isn't just another crazed cult leader, but a mystical being with unimaginable powers over the living, and the dead.

The result is the amazing journey the rest of the book takes its main character, Phil, on. Through the mad, boiling desert to find his lost friend and what he has become: something that will force Phil to confront true evil, and to look deep inside his own troubled soul and pray he outlives it all.

Greg Gifune crafted this brilliant novel after the immortal classic by Joseph Conrad, The Heart of Darkness. I like to think of it as a modern version of that classic book, and it will take you on a long journey through doorways that lead to places not many writers have the balls to write about.

Children of Chaos is a testament to the incredible writing of Greg F. Gifune, and will carve his name into the heart of horror for future readers to marvel over.

Not even six months in to 2009, and after reading Children of Chaos, I have named it one of the best reads of this year.

If you love great storytelling, horror, or dark fiction, you'll thank yourself later for picking this one up.

Simply put, “Children of Chaos” is a devastating and darkly beautiful journey into madness and terror. It is not for the faint of heart, to be sure, but Greg. F. Gifune is one of the best writers of horror and supernatural thrillers at work today. With artful and hypnotic prose, Gifune transported me to a landscape turned virtually surreal by unmitigated human cruelty, but he never resorts to the smug sadism of torture porn, which I absolutely loathe. The story begins when three teenaged boys encounter a strange man covered in horrible scars during a torrential downpour, and it ends with a deeply damaged hero in the grip of a terrifying cult that lives along a desolate stretch of Mexican road known as The Corridor of Demons. Gifune frames the grotesqueries and frights with psychological depth and soulful assuredness. I’ve unearthed a lot of great new authors as a result of random Amazon searches; Greg F. Gifune is one of the true gems you should know about.

Inside Stories, Invaluable Interviews

Hans Ulrich Obrist is a Swiss art historian and curator and has been absorbed for the last few years with his 'Interview Project'. This is the second volume of these published interviews and they make for informative and entertaining reading. He arranges the interviews according to the birth dates of his interviewees spanning form 1900 to 1989. Each interview is backed with biographical data as well as the time and particular place where each interview takes place. His subjects represent the gamut of art; writers, painters, dancers, photographers, architects, filmmakers, philosophers, singers including such people as Studs Terkel, Michel Houellebecq, Annette Messager, Jason Rhoads, Bj�rk, Terence Koh, Merce Cunningham, Czeslaw Milosz, Richard Hamilton, Ai Wei Wei, Doris Lessing - a total of 70 cultural icons, each taking up about 10 to 15 pages.

The interviews are more dialogues than question and answer format: each time with a new person expands the possibilities of conversation and the range of topics discussed. With Volume I and II this is probably the closest we will come to oral history as captured by an informed listener. It is a big book (950 pages) and is not meant to be read linearly. Deserves Recognition

This is my favorite volume of Basil Copper's stories. Beautifully written, rather old-fashioned, quality stories of the horror and macabre.
Personally I didn't have any problems opening the book or with the text, apart from some text errors, which are about the same as in many Kindle books I read.

GREAT stories, but hard to read paperbacks...

I love Basil Copper's work, but these 3 paperbacks published by PS/Drugstore Indian Press are very problematic. The books are relatively thick and and almost impossible to open and see a full page of text! Hopefully they will correct in later printings but I had to return them and buy the out-of-print hardcover set just to read them. If you can live with this problem, by all means buy the paperbacks. Basil Copper was one of the great 20th century Gothic-horror writers in the Conan Doyle tradition and deserves a wide readership.

Shifting among numerous perspectives, the tale also benefits from an ingenious crime-caper subplot involving the Tar Man, an eighteenth-century thief who learns to toggle between eras. This isn’t without flaws; the heavy-handed historical scene setting and old-fashioned dialogue may overwhelm some readers. Still, Buckley-Archer has delivered an effective, satisfying sequel that will ensure an audience for the trilogy’s conclusion, in which Gideon will apparently return from offstage. About the Author
Linda Buckley-Archer is the author of the critically acclaimed Gideon trilogy. Originally trained as a linguist, she is now a full-time novelist and scriptwriter. The Gideon Trilogy was inspired by the criminal underworld of eighteenth-century London.

thoughtful and thought provoking series is still good in the second of the series

This series is terrific and each segment pleases. I love the glimpses of travel, food, and the not so comfortable comforts of the 18th century and it has led to many dinner table conversations in my family about what if...
The unexpected surprise that awaits Kate and Peter's father when they return to rescue him is a wonderful plot twist, it allows the story to progress in a very interesting direction and allows another period of British history to be discussed. The surprising success of the Tar-man in the current century is also amazing. I think if your family has always wondered what it would be like to travel to a different century, you could not come up with a better series. The ideas about the ramifications of time travel in general that Ms Buckley-Archer pose are indeed profound concepts simply stated and easily grasped by even the least philosophical among us. I don't think I remember reading another book on the subject that is so very good at identifying the crux of the impact on history. The new characters are a great addition, and the familiar ones from the first book are further developed in a satisfying manner. There is more to come, and the sequel is just as good as the first two. Please read this series! Recommend it! You will not be sorry.

We originally started our journey of Gideon"s Trilogy with The Time Thief, second in the set. Since then, we've begun afresh with Gideon The Cutpurse, which meant listening to The time Thief again, but it definitely was not a burden to do so. We loved it and decided to purchase the books for the grandkids.
