Exactly what I was looking for
By R. D Johnson
Quick, convenient alphabetical reference to HTML5 syntax right at my fingertips. I still find dead-tree books quicker to navigate than websites or Kindles (sorry Amazon) for this type of information. Each entry is tagged as to whether it is "not in HTML 4.01", HTML5 only, W3C or WHATWG. The appendixes list the common character entries and give an XHTML syntax overview. The front matter contains a concise list of HTML5 event handlers (ondrop, ondrag, etc.), and an excellent list of all the HTML5 elements organized by function appears just after the last alphabetic element entry. Another superb O'Reilly Pocket Reference.

As an ebook this is the worst one
By JuanPablo Jofre
This review is about the ebook format of this book, not necessarily about the content (which I hope is good in paper format); I have a Kindle DX with all my technical books, for easier reading while coding or studying.

I bought the book to have a handy reference of all HTML5 tags, while I'm coding; so I could easily look up any tag reference, one would have assumed.

Well, it is impossible to find the tag you are looking for unless you advance each page of the book until you find the tag you want to know about.
The table of contents will let you go any where in the book with the exception of the tags in the alphabetical list of Elements (aka tags) !!!. There is also section, in the content, named 'Elements Organized by Function' that covers the grand schema of the elements (tags); so, you can go to the 'Tables' subsection in the hope that you'll find the text links to the alphabetical reference... that was also a good idea that ended there. The 'Tables' subsection contains, in one line, all the tags related to tables with no link to the reference section; at least they are sorted in alphabetical order, so you can copy all ten of them to a paper page and start advancing pages without having to go back.
You won't believe this... In the 'Table of Contents' there is an entry that says 'Index'; I clicked on the link (remember, I use a Kindle DX... no mouse here, no touchscreen either). Advanced page, several times, until I got to the T letter, searched for 'Table' and found "table element" with no link or page number to go to. On the sunny side, at least I know this reference book has content for the concept I'm trying to lookup... it is just a few advance pages ahead.

If the Editor (not the Writer) would have done his/hers job in barely minimum acceptable way; the editor would have found that the digital version of the book was useless and would have had the Indexer to add the required links to the digital version of the book. Don't get me wrong here... indexing a technical book is a highly skilled art, there are very few good indexers; indexing content is an intense and time consuming task. Indexing is an art as described by Michelangelo when asked about how he sculpted the 'David', he said: "It is easy. You just chip away the stone that doesn't look like David."

I hope those people who bought the paper edition will write a good review of this reference (content wise), to me this is a dead book. The only thing remaining is to wait for an update to this digital version of the book.

With my best regards,

JuanPablo Jofre

Very Handy!
By Animal Lover
This paperback book is 7 X 4 1/4 X 1/4. This is a very nice pocket reference. The reference starts by listing all of the elements in alphabetical order. For each element, if provides a definition of the element, the usage for it, attributes and examples of how the element can be used in various situations. It also has the start- and end-tag requirements for every element. At the back of the book is a list of Latin-1 (ISO-8859-1). Behind that is an alphabetical index. The index is the description that you are looking for and the corresponding page. It has 4 empty pages, at the very back, that you can jot down notes. This is the 5th edition.

The binding is glued together, however, it has a crease running down the edge of the front cover so you can bend it back. That helps relieve the stress on the binding.

The books alphabetical listing is of every element and attribute in HTML5, HTML5.1, and the WHATWG living standard.

This is a quick and comprehensive reference. Very indispensable.

This volume is a direct result of the International Symposium on Japanese Sentence Processing held at Duke University. The symposium provided the first opportunity for researchers in three disciplinary areas from both Japan and the United States to participate in a conference where they could discuss issues concerning Japanese syntactic processing. The goals of the symposium were three-fold:

* to illuminate the mechanisms of Japanese sentence processing from the viewpoints of linguistics, psycholinguistics and computer science;

* to synthesize findings about the mechanisms of Japanese sentence processing by researchers in these three fields in Japan and the United States;

* to lay foundations for future interdisciplinary research in Japanese sentence processing, as well as international collaborations between researchers in Japan and the United States.

The chapters in this volume have been written from the points of view of three different disciplines, with various immediate objectives -- from building usable speech understanding systems to investigating the nature of competence grammars for natural languages. All of the papers share the long term goal of understanding the nature of human language processing mechanisms. The book is concerned with two central issues -- the universality of language processing mechanisms, and the nature of the relation between the components of linguistic knowledge and language processing. This volume demonstrates that interdisciplinary research can be fruitful, and provides groundwork for further research in Japanese sentence processing.

Finding Order in Nature: The Naturalist Tradition from Linnaeus to E. O. Wilson (Johns Hopkins Introductory Studies in the History of Scien

Since emerging as a discipline in the middle of the eighteenth century, natural history has been at the heart of the life sciences. It gave rise to the major organizing theory of life―evolution―and continues to be a vital science with impressive practical value. Central to advanced work in ecology, agriculture, medicine, and environmental science, natural history also attracts enormous popular interest.

In Finding Order in Nature Paul Farber traces the development of the naturalist tradition since the Enlightenment and considers its relationship to other research areas in the life sciences. Written for the general reader and student alike, the volume explores the adventures of early naturalists, the ideas that lay behind classification systems, the development of museums and zoos, and the range of motives that led collectors to collect. Farber also explores the importance of sociocultural contexts, institutional settings, and government funding in the story of this durable discipline.

"The quest for insight into the order of nature leads naturalists beyond classification to the creation of general theories that explain the living world. Those naturalists who focus on the order of nature inquire about the ecological relationships among organisms and also among organisms and their surrounding environments. They ask fundamental questions of evolution, about how change actually occurs over short and long periods of time. Many naturalists are drawn, consequently, to deeper philosophical and ethical issues: What is the extent of our ability to understand nature? And, understanding nature, will we be able to preserve it? Naturalists question the meaning of the order they discover and ponder our moral responsibility for it."―from the Introduction

Amazon.com Review
Before the 18th century, scholarly interest in the natural world was largely the province of medical doctors, artists, and alchemists. During that century, however, and for many reasons, the study of nature spread to all sectors of society. As Paul Farber points out in this history, most private libraries contained Buffon's 36-volume encyclopedia of animals, and practical-minded politicians such as Thomas Jefferson urged that the natural world be catalogued with an eye to economic potential and utility, the gods of the Enlightenment. The resulting attention to classification and systematics influenced natural history for generations. This work of sorting remains at the heart of basic science, Farber continues, and if some scholars scorn it as old-fashioned, the need to catalog the world continues to be pressing as the biodiversity crisis mounts. Examining the contributions of thinkers as various as Nicholas Baudin, Julian Huxley, Charles Lucien Bonaparte, Stephen Jay Gould, and Edward O. Wilson, Farber shows that the "naturalist tradition," which seeks to identify the underlying order of nature, is not only of central importance to the life sciences, but also an ideal vehicle for communicating advanced research to the educated public. --Gregory McNamee

From Publishers Weekly
Farber, professor of the history of science at Oregon State University, examines the almost three-century-long tradition of natural history in this slim book, part of the Johns Hopkins Introductory Studies in the History of Science series. Natural history, according to Farber, falls between "folk biology" and mainstream science. "What distinguishes natural history from the 'folk biology' of earlier studies is the attempt of naturalists to group animals, plants and minerals according to shared underlying features and to use rational, systematic methods to bring order to the otherwise overwhelming variation found in nature." What distinguishes it from contemporary science is the latter's reliance on experimentation. Farber does an impressive job of demonstrating how practitioners like Linnaeus, Buffon, Saint-Hilaire and Cuvier advanced the field and set the stage for the development of science as we know it today. Also discussed are the roles played by newly developed natural history museums, botanical gardens and zoological parks in both the scientific enterprise and in galvanizing public opinion about the importance of the natural world. The great showman P.T. Barnum, although more flamboyant than those heading the world's leading state-run institutions, played a similar role in attracting the public to natural curiosities, according to Farber in this estimable volume. 15 halftones and 7 line drawings. From Library Journal
Farber (history of science, Oregon State Univ.) artfully compresses into one small, engaging volume the span of natural history as a field of study from its beginnings in 18th century to the present day. Starting with Linnaeus's and Buffon's endeavors to classify and understand the natural world, Farber shows the development and constant diversification of the discipline while weaving in the broader scientific and religious context of the times. He presents the history in a very straightforward manner that is easily understood by lay reader or student. What results is truly an introduction to the subject, outlining the major events and key players while including little detail. Though this lack of detail leads occasionally to simplfication, it also produces a concise work that gives the general reader a solid understanding of the subject. There are only a few instances, such as the description of Darwin and the ongoing religious debate sparked by his theories, in which the text would benefit from more in-depth treatment. Overall, this is an excellent introduction to the history of natural history. Recommended for all academic libraries, as well as public libraries that collect heavily in the areas of natural history or the history of science.DMarianne Stowell Bracke, Univ. of Houston Libs., TX

Fine Study of An Important and Neglected Subject
By Thomas Reynolds
Thi is a very well thought out, very well documented, very well written book on a subject that should have been far more carefully studied than it has been. Namely, over the last two hundred years the natural sciences have changed enormously - not just in their theoretical foundations but their methodologies as well. This book focuses on the life sciences, but as a geologist I can confirm that very, very similar things to what this book describes have also taken place in the earth sciences during the 20th century. No practicing natural scientist who wants to understand the changes in their science, well enough to keep up with them, should be without this book.

Good, but...
By Robert Jordan
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It was well-written and I learned a lot from it. I was introduced to a number of historic figures who I had previously known nothing about and it did a good job fitting natural history into a solid historical context.

However, I felt the book was lacking in a couple key areas, namely citations and depth. I found it odd that the book contained no citations. Especially when dealing with the history of science, I believe that properly cited works are a must. Instead of a list of citations for each chapter, at the end of the book there is a very long list of "suggested readings" that maybe we are supposed to assume are the source of the authors information. The lack of citations makes me feel like this book is not as factually rigorous as it should be.

My second problem with the book was its overall lack of depth. At many points it felt more like an outline than a book. Many important people and ideas were mentioned and then immediately left by the wayside. I guess that isn't too surprising since the book covers Linnaeus to Wilson in only 150 pages.

Overall I'm glad I read the book, but I wish it had citations instead of suggested reading and I wish it had delved deeper into many of the important people and topics that were glossed over.

Natural History Lives!---A Review for Teachers
By John Richard Schrock
"Finding Order in Nature: The Naturalist Tradition from Linnaeus to E.O. Wilson" by Paul Lawrence Farber, Johns Hopkins Introductory Studies in the history of Science Series; The Johns Hopkins University Press, 2000, 136 pages, softcover.

This is an uneven book of nine chapters, varying between the history of central figures in natural history, the evolving philosophical mindset of the times, the gradual development of evolutionary perspectives, asides into related science philosophies such as French experimentalism, the gradual maturation of evolution under the characters involved, and finally an admiring perspective of contemporary naturalist E.O. Wilson. In a spectrum from "pop science" to serious a research review, it leans toward "pop" in part due to lack of detailed attribution, either through footnotes or reference citations. Nevertheless, it does “all hang together.”

Chapter 1 lays out the context of Linnaeus’s work and the work of his contemporary Georges Louis Leclerc de Buffon. Linnaeus is commonly mentioned for his system of classification that lives today in his seven major ranks and binomial system, but Buffon was just as important in addressing the need for an encyclopedic compilation of life, from his position in the French Royal Garden which allowed him political influence and legitimacy and recognition among scientists and politicians.

Chapter 2 shows the gradual building of natural history and the classification system from a mere listing or description of what exists into a science of describing. It is disappointing that Farber does not try to trace the origin of Linnaeus’s ideas (why did Linnaeus reduce names to two, etc.)? However, 1760 to 1840 became a time of expansive travel that paralleled colonization by the British, French, etc. and massive amounts of specimens were brought back to showcase that colonization.

Chapter 3 incorporates the classification schemes into various interpretations of structure and describes an old argument over the structure-function dichotomy. The rapidly emerging science of comparative anatomy that runs about parallel to Chapter 2 pits Georges Cuvier against Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire. Cuvier advocated for organs operating as functional units that had to operate in a whole system and these basic plans formed compartmentalized classification units and there were four distinct blueprints with no transitional forms in the fossil record. Saint-Hilaire saw continuous change over time. Richard Owen proposed a limited “archetype” that was the vertebrate blueprint. Karl Ernst von Baer felt he could see similarity in the early embryonic stages of creatures but in four distinct groups. This play back-and-forth between natural history and the comparative anatomists set the stage for the next step.

Chapter 4 leads up to Darwin’s publication in 1859 and many readers will be surprised to find that the unifying concept of evolution was already incipient, just awaiting a fuller explanation of its mechanisms. The nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, Charles Lucien Bonaparte, traveled to America and studied every major collection of birds in the world, compiling an encyclopedic catalog. Whereas prior collections were soon decimated by dermestid beetles, the development of insecticides allowed taxidermy to last, and development of better guns allowed collections to expand greatly for public appreciation if not for science. However, the increased collecting and major compilations now allowed natural history to become a science and “was reaching a point of synthesis.”

Chapter 5 unfolds Wallace and Darwin’s arrival at natural selection as the mechanism for evolution, and this makes classification a way to understand evolutionary relationships. In science, we tend to think that the acceptance of evolution among scientists was abrupt and the only resistance was from religious groups, but the broader historical background laid down in natural history up to this point helps us understand how widespread acceptance of evolution lingered among various scientists for forty years after Darwin’s 1859 "Origin of Species." Lord Kelvin’s use of physics to calculate a young earth from thermodynamics before radioactivity was understood was just one objection from within the science community. Owen pointed out von Baer’s position that animals could still not be arranged into a linear sequence. And without the rediscovery of Mendel’s genetic mechanisms until 1901, there was great difficulty determining exactly how variation could lead to speciation. While Thomas Huxley and Joseph Dalton Hooker and Asa Gray pushed Darwin’s theory, Agassiz and others did not accept Darwinian evolution. Ernst Haeckel examined embryos and united von Baer’s separate lineages, contending that this recapitulation of phylogeny revealed the past evolution.

Chapter 6 summarizes another thread of work deriving from Nicholas Baudin’s French naval expedition collections in 1800-1804 and its contribution to physiology. In addition, the work of Xavier Bichat and Claude Bernard as experimental physiologists with a stress on experimentation, resulted in a very productive line of research for resolving contemporary problems, but at that time gave no evidence for evolutionary classification because you cannot go back in time to experiment. It is at this stage that biology classes begin to use lab exercises. Researchers in different countries pursue different philosophies of biology and Farber uses the contradictory results of Hans Driesch and Wilhelm Roux in embryology to trace acceptance of evolution versus experimental biology. This results in the redefinition of biology as experimental, and contributes to a decline in natural history.

Chapter 7 notes that the golden age of natural history occurred in the late 1800s with the expansion of natural history museums and a shift from pure research and entertainment for the elite to education for the masses.

Mendel’s laws were rediscovered and now understood. For readers not familiar with the “new synthesis,” Farber provides a brief history of Julian Huxley’s pulling together of genetics and evolution, along with Thomas Hunt Morgan and other contributors in Chapter 8. The contributions of Ernst Mayr, George Gaylord Simpson, Theodosius Dobzhansky, are mentioned but this chapter is short and runs out of steam before unfolding the full scenario of their contributions to the new synthesis.

Chapter 9 is written in a different voice. And it is more difficult to write about science history when you are writing in the present without the benefit of future hindsight. To some extent, this is a broad-ranging admiration of Prof. E.O. Wilson as a holdover of the naturalist tradition. One early goal of that tradition was to put-it-all-together by providing an all-encompassing web of knowledge about nature, and Darwin began that process in one limited way. However, Farber sees E.O. Wilson’s more expansive work, first in sociobiology and now in extensive philosophical work attempting to tie together the whole of human scientific knowledge as accomplishing what Linnaeus and others had tried to do in the context of their limited times and limited knowledge. Of course, while earlier scientists who proposed biology as merely an extension of physics did not realize the extent of complexity and unpredictable emergent properties that biology presents, Wilson does handle this unification with considerably more intellectual rigor. What the book strives to show is that much of this effort over the last centuries has been driven by the attempt to “find order in nature” and that is exactly the correct title for this book.

A three page epilogue concludes the book, with references to Steven Jay Gould, Walt Disney’s early wildlife documentaries, and Henry David Thoreau’s Walden. Farber’s conjecture that communication technology has expanded our appreciation of natural history is highly questionable because watching nature documentaries is not the same as being in nature and observing nature personally. Indeed recent research indicates that the onslaught of social media is isolating even rural “farm” kids as they now ride in enclosed cabs with earphones while the tractor drives itself.

Seven pages of “suggested further reading” provides the next step for those wishing to pursue specific historical personalities. The six-page index is adequate.

The End of Literary Theory, by Stein Haugrom Olsen

The essays in this collection are concerned with the philosophical problems that arise in connection with the understanding and evaluation of literature - such problems as the relationship between the work and the author (authorial intention), between the work and the world (reference and truth), the definition of a literary work, and the nature of literary theory itself. Professor Olsen attacks many of the orthodoxies of modern literary theory, in particular the enterprise to build a comprehensive systematic literary theory. His own work is informed by a consistent perspective: the assumption that literature is a social institution governed by conventions, and that answers to problems of interpretation and appreciation can be found only through an analysis of these conventions. This is an important book for scholars and students of literary theory and philosophy, especially for those who see an ever-increasing cross-fertilization between the two disciplines.

The Culture Map (INTL ED): Decoding How People Think, Lead, and Get Things Done Across Cultures, by Erin Meyer

Whether you work in a home office or abroad, business success in our ever more globalized and virtual world requires the skills to navigate through cultural differences and decode cultures foreign to your own. Renowned expert Erin Meyer is your guide through this subtle, sometimes treacherous terrain where people from starkly different backgrounds are expected to work harmoniously together.

When you have Americans who precede anything negative with three nice comments; French, Dutch, Israelis, and Germans who get straight to the point (“your presentation was simply awful”); Latin Americans and Asians who are steeped in hierarchy; Scandinavians who think the best boss is just one of the crowd—the result can be, well, sometimes interesting, even funny, but often disastrous.

Even with English as a global language, it's easy to fall into cultural traps that endanger careers and sink deals when, say, a Brazilian manager tries to fathom how his Chinese suppliers really get things done, or an American team leader tries to get a handle on the intra-team dynamics between his Russian and Indian team members.

In The Culture Map, Erin Meyer provides a field-tested model for decoding how cultural differences impact international business. She combines a smart analytical framework with practical, actionable advice for succeeding in a global world.

About the Author
Erin Meyer is a professor at INSEAD, one of the world's leading international business schools. Living and working in Africa, Europe, and the United States prompted Meyer's study of the communication patterns and business systems of different parts of the world. Are you unaware of cultural differences?
By Camerons
Really good for international relations. I work in a global role. I can't tell you the number of times I've had a German, an American, and a Chinese person all on the same call. The cultures are so different that the interactions can quickly go awry. The German will be the most abrupt, seeming to interrupt, being totally blunt, and not realizing he could offend. The Chinese will be the quietest, waiting to ask their turn to speak, sometimes having an underlying meaning behind the words that isn't blunt, and being very careful to not offend. The American will be in the middle. What could happen is that the Chinese person finds the German to be a rude, heartless boor. The German will think the Chinese person not forceful, not direct enough, and pussy-footing around. The reality is, we all have different cultural heritages which overlay our perceptions that we aren't fully aware of. Meyer has worked quite a bit internationally and has 8 attributes where the different cultures are put on various continuum. After reading this, I came away being more effective in my global interactions and have now led several discussions successfully. And of course, learning to be aware of my own cultural issues...

Well-written, Insightful, and Fascinating
By G. Galanti
It's rare that I pick up a nonfiction book and can't put it down. "The Culture Map" is one of those rare books. I'm an anthropologist; culture is my area of expertise. I've been doing it for a long time. And yet, I learned so much from this book. Meyer has a way of taking things you might already know, and putting them in a context that brings about that "aha!" moment. She is incredibly knowledgable. At the same time, her writing is very accessible. It reads like a relaxed conversation with a friend. It's filled with illustrative stories. I highly recommend this book to everyone, whether in international business or not.

Excellent for those working in or leading multicultural business teams
By Az2580
This was one of the absolute best business reads I've had in recent years. The 8 scale concept is easy to understand and immediately applicable for those working with multi-cultural business teams. I enjoyed the storytelling aspect of Meyer's writing as well- it brought concepts to life nicely and also made this a practical read. Extra bonus is the Culture Map tool available on her website.

A Universe from Nothing. Lawrence M. Krauss, by Lawrence Maxwell Krauss

Internationally renowned theoretical physicist and bestselling author Lawrence Krauss offers provocative, revelatory answers to the biggest philosophical questions: Where did our universe come from? Why does anything exist? And how is it all going to end? 'Why is there something rather than nothing?' is the question atheists and scientists are always asked, and until now there has not been a satisfying scientific answer. Today, exciting scientific advances provide new insight into this cosmological mystery: not only cansomething arise from nothing, but something willalwaysarise from nothing. A mind-bending trip back to the beginning of the beginning, A Universe from Nothingauthoritatively presents the most recent evidence that explains how our universe evolved - and the implications for how it's going to end. It will provoke, challenge, and delight readers to look at the most basic underpinnings of existence in a whole new way. In the words of Richard Dawkins: this could potentially be the most important scientific book since Darwin's On the Origin of Species.

From Booklist
Theoretical physicist Krauss, author of several books about physics, including The Physics of Star Trek (1995), admits up front that he is not “sympathetic to the conviction that creation requires a creator.” The book isn’t exclusively an argument against divine creation, or intelligent design, but, rather, an exploration of a tantalizing question: How and why can something—the universe in which we live, for example—spring from nothing? It’s an evolutionary story, really, taking us back to the Big Bang and showing how the universe developed over billions of years into its present form. Sure to be controversial, for Krauss does not shy away from the atheistic implications of a scientifically explainable universe, the book is full of big ideas explained in simple, precise terms, making it accessible to all comers, from career physicists to the lay reader whose knowledge of the field begins and ends with a formula few understand, E=mc. --David Pitt

Review
''Nothing is not nothing. Nothing is something. That's how a cosmos can be spawned from the void--a profound idea conveyed in A Universe from Nothing that unsettles some yet enlightens others. Meanwhile, it's just another day on the job for physicist Lawrence Krauss.'' --Neil deGrasse Tyson, astrophysicist, American Museum of Natural History

''We have been living through a revolution in cosmology as wondrous as that initiated by Copernicus. Here is the essential, engrossing, and brilliant guide.'' --Ian McEwan, New York Times bestselling author

''In A Universe from Nothing, Lawrence Krauss has written a thrilling introduction to the current state of cosmology--the branch of science that tells us about the deep past and deeper future of everything. As it turns out, everything has a lot to do with nothing--and nothing to do with God. This is a brilliant and disarming book.'' --Sam Harris, New York Times bestselling author

''Astronomers at the beginning of the twentieth century were wondering whether there was anything beyond our Milky Way galaxy. As Lawrence Krauss lucidly explains, astronomers living two trillion years from now will perhaps be pondering precisely the same question! Beautifully navigating through deep intellectual waters, Krauss presents the most recent ideas on the nature of our cosmos and of our place within it. A fascinating read.'' --Mario Livio, author of Is God a Mathematician?

''In this clear and crisply written book, Lawrence Krauss outlines the compelling evidence that our complex cosmos has evolved from a hot, dense state and how this progress has emboldened theorists to develop fascinating speculations about how things really began.'' --Martin Rees, author of Our Final Hour

''A series of brilliant insights and astonishing discoveries have rocked the universe in recent years, and Lawrence Krauss has been in the thick of it. With his characteristic verve, and using many clever devices, he's made that remarkable story remarkably accessible. The climax is a bold scientific answer to the great question of existence: why is there something rather than nothing?'' --Frank Wilczek, Nobel Laureate and Herman Feshbach professor at MIT

''With characteristic wit, eloquence, and clarity Lawrence Krauss gives a wonderfully illuminating account of how science deals with one of the biggest questions of all: how the universe's existence could arise from nothing. It is a question that philosophy and theology get themselves into a muddle over, but that science can offer real answers too, as Krauss' lucid explanation shows. Here is the triumph of physics over metaphysics, reason and enquiry over obfuscation and myth, made plain for all to see: Krauss gives us a treat as well as an education in fascinating style.'' --A. C. Grayling, author of The Good Book

Such topics are not easy to convey to the general public
By Joop Beris
"A Universe from Nothing" is a very special book, in my opinion. It deals not only with cosmology, quantum mechanics, general relativity and other areas of science but isn't afraid to face the philosophical implications of a universe that arose spontaneously out of seemingly nothing. Modern science no longer has need for a First Cause or a Prime Mover to explain how the universe that we inhabit could have come about.

Such topics are not easy to convey to the general public. There are two obvious pitfalls which must be avoided: either making the book too simple or making it too complex. Krauss manages to almost avoid them completely, while still introducing such alien concepts as quantum fluctuations, the curvature of space and of course general relativity. That is not to say that there aren't certain pages you may wish to reread in order to comprehend what Krauss is conveying. That probably isn't so much a fault of Krauss as an author but because a lot of topics he explains to you, simply defy common sense. Especially quantum mechanics, which tends to make my brain say "no, go away".

Despite exploring these difficult concepts, "A Universe from Nothing" doesn't read like a typical science book. It's more like a detective book, with Krauss revealing clue by clue the stunning scientific discoveries about our universe in the last century. It is incredible to think that the 400 billion galaxies, each containing hundreds of billions of stars may have arose out of nothing but if you follow the author, you do get the feeling that yes, it could very well have done.
As interesting as the book is, it is also funny plenty of times. For instance, when Krauss quips that "theologians are experts at nothing" when they accuse him of not truly understanding the concept "nothing".

In short, "A Universe from Nothing" is a very thought-provoking book, a compelling read and a great summary of the advances science has made in the last 100 years to explain our universe.

Good explanations of physics, but not argued well
By Alexander Praefectus
The explanation of Big Bang cosmology and general relativity was excellent. I learned a lot about both from reading the first parts of the book. Pages one through 21 are definitely a good way of starting off the book, with a complete explanation of the evidence for the Big Bang and simple diagrams to answer "Where is the center of the universe ?". Indeed, even the critics of his thesis seem to agree that he did a good job of explaining science.

I also enjoyed a lot of the humor in the book, like the jokes about the geometry skills of American high school students and the stereotype of the graduate student as a slave who does work the professors don't want to. The afterword from Richard Dawkins was beautiful as well.

As somebody interested in the philosophy of physics, particularly the origins of the universe, I was excited to read this book. I wanted to see the argument that was presented by Krauss in favor of the idea that the universe came from nothing, especially after reading Quentin Smith's argument for the same idea in Theism, Atheism, and Big Bang Cosmology. Unfortunately, I found the title of the book to erroneous. The nothing that Lawrence Krauss describes in this book is not nothing. He is not describing the beginning of the universe from nothing, but the beginning of the universe from a quantum vacuum, which is described by physical laws and takes place in space-time. I don't think the content of the book lives up to the title. There is a debate in physics about whether virtual particles have real, ontological status, or if they are just results of equations and have no further implications on reality. I wish he had given more attention to this issue, because he didn't establish anything futher than the fact that the equations imply their existence. These two flaws were central to the purpose of the book.

Overall, I would recommend purchasing it. It has great explanations of physics, and you wil learn something by time you put the book down. However, even as an atheist, I feel that Dr. Krauss failed to establish his thesis, ending with a 3/5.

Excellent Resource for Smart People
By PS
I was not able to finish this book. I will admit that the subject matter was over my head, so I gave up after just a few chapters. However, for people smart enough to see this book through to the end, I think you will find Dr. Krauss to be a very persuasive man. From what I could understand, he crafted his arguments with solid building materials (i.e. evidence) and never made a definitive claim for anything he couldn't prove to the level of a theory. That's what sets him apart from proponents of Intelligent Design, such as Dr. Stephen Meyer, who, with all their sophistic smoke and mirrors, are guilty of a 'god-of-the-gaps' fallacy in their assertions.
