Speech textbook

Cerritos College, Norwalk, California Speech communication department uses this textbook. Their department Chair was student of the author of this textbook. When depart chair was only a grad student at CSUF the professor who helped the department chair of Speech Department with her thesis for graduate degree was the author of this book and at the time Professor at CSUF graduate school. This is great book to learn from. Other than the readings, which I am reading Chapter 4 Keys to Understanding Cultural and Ethnic Identities, it's good to have other activities in class to help digest all the theories from the book with interactions in classroom amongst students.

Great rationale for understanding other cultures

I was assigned this text as an assignment. Written from an entirely secular viewpoint, the writers provide thorough rationale for today's culture to better understand how and why to relate and include other cultures in life, business, and day-to-day living.
As a Christian, I found this book a rich and rewarding plea for us to better serve, lead, and impact communities through the process of understanding and including--rather than isolating.

Well worth a look

I'm teaching a class in intercultural comm that uses another text. Within naming names, I'm really not fond of the other (widely used) book and have been very grateful for the strong comm. focus of this option. Although I'm using it as a supplementary text for developing course materials and lectures, I plan on using this as the assigned text when the opportunity for change arises.

About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. Thinking Mathematically (5th Ed.) - An Unbiased Review

can't work math. It scares me to death. I was one of the unfortunate people who, as a child, was taught math using the "New Moden Math Concept". Subsequently, like most who had the misfortune of suffering the course of instruction, the basics were sort of skipped over while we all learned "Base 108", "Base Pi" Base Chevrolet", and all the other crud we'd never use in the real world. As a result I am, therefore, mathematically illiterate.

I have needed one (1) course to complete my degree. I have been avoiding this course for years. Yep, it's basic college mathematics. The thought of math makes me sweat, nauseous, and causes massive amounts of burning stomach acid. I decided to take the plunge and signed up for a distant learning math class. The course required Dr. Robert Blitzers book, "Thinking Mathematically - 5th Edition".

I am now on chapter 4 and am learning math! I have put away the bottles of Malox and the sweat bands. I actually understand what I am reading. This book is great! My first homework assignments have been graded far better than I had ever hoped for. It is working for me. (At least the first 4 chapters anyway)

Dr. Blitzers' book utilizes every day situations as related to math. This makes it easier to understand for the non-math major. The book is loaded with examples and work problems the answers to which, are in the back of the book. You cannot just use the answers, you will have to work for them in order to learn. However, having the answers accessible makes it easy to review and find where you have errored (if at all).

Although the book is pricey, it is well worth the money. The book is absolutley loaded with information, is large, and is over 1,000 pages in length. It is well written and if I can understand it, anyone can. (Sometimes I have to reread the info before it sinks in...but it does!) I would suggest this book for anyone who wants to refresh their math skills not just students taking a college level math course.

Don't get me wrong, I am still having to work twice as hard as the person who has a working grasp of math, but I am finally learning the math concepts I should have 40 years ago. I thank Dr. Robert Blitzer and his book "Thinking Mathematically" for putting me at ease while I am doing so.

Very Helpful

Very easy to understand and learn from. I needed this book for a college class, and while my college has this available to rent I thought it might be nice to own my own copy. It's only been one month of class but I am very glad I bought my own copy instead of renting. I haven't written in it but I can tell the content of this book will continue to be useful for me through-out my college math courses. It's basically an extremely good recap of everything I had for high school math. Sets, Reasoning, Logic, Algebra, and Statistics are covered in this book, to name a few. It is well written and is not boring, which is surprising for a text book. The text and lessons covered are easy to follow and broken down and explained.

Math is usually my weakest subject, but no longer!

I was required to purchase this book for my math class. I scored it for way less here than I would have had to shell out at the campus book store, saving myself lots of money. Just considering the purchase of this text has made me a math whiz!

I think the cow has some sort of *Arithmagic*(tm), because I'm acing that class like it's basket weaving! Seriously, two tests, two high A's! Heck yeah!!

The book has clear instructions that are easy to understand, and lots of practice problems. As seems to be standard for math texts, the answers to the odd problems are given in the back of the book. A very good book with interesting mathematical concepts unlike your standard algebra book.

it'll make a grown man cry

Okay, before I make this unmanly confession, let me first state in my own defense that I have two small children and I was listening to the conclusion of this book at a very early hour, before I'd even had breakfast to fortify me for the day. That said, I'll now acknowledge that I very nearly started sobbing...
In 1976, Katherine Paterson's son David was 8 years old when his friend, Lisa Hill, was struck by lightning and killed. A year later Bridge to Terabithia was published, winning a Newberry Medal and becoming, if such a thing is possible, an instant classic. Ms Paterson drew upon this personal tragedy to create the story of a boy, Jess Aarons, and a girl, Leslie Burke, in rural Virginia, who become the best of friends. Jess is the middle child, and only son, of a reticent father, who struggles to earn a living. Leslie is the daughter, and only child, of two successful writers who have moved to the country, next door to the Aarons, for lifestyle reasons.
The friendship between the two kids is hesitant at first, particularly after Leslie usurps Jess's title as the fastest runner in their 5th grade class at Lark Creek Elementary. But both have some trouble fitting in with theirs peers, Jess because of his interest in Art, Leslie because of her scholastic ability and her parents' very 70s social attitudes (like not having a TV), and this shared awkwardness gives them a unique bond. Leslie creates an imaginary kingdom called Terabithia for them to rule over, accessible only be a rope swing over a local creek. The imaginary adventures they share there and a series of incidents at school bring the two closer and closer together. But then an ugly reality intrudes upon their idyllic world and the various characters are forced to deal with a tragic death. To say more might ruin the story, so let's leave it at that.
I understand that the use of this book in classrooms is frequently challenged by parents. If the reason for this is that they feel that the central crisis of the book may be too intense for children, I can sympathize with their feeling. But it seems like an intensity that is well worth their children's while. Ms Paterson handles the situation quite beautifully and affords a real opportunity for parents to discuss the matter of death with their kids, a topic which most families hopefully haven't much had to cope with. Reading the book is a difficult emotional experience, but better to first confront these emotions in a controlled fictional setting and begin to learn how to deal with them, than to remain totally sheltered and have to deal with them, completely unprepared, when the tragedy is real.

Parents, listen up

While I respect parents looking out for their children, I think someone should listen up for a moment and take note of one fact. While many children complain that this book is "boring", we must remember that most fifth-grade children call any book that they did not choose for themselves as boring. In this day and age, children are not satisfied with books, as they require a slightly longer attention span than the television set. Those claims have now been tossed out the window.

Now... parents. Sometimes mild censoring of books is understandable. Children should not read books with explicit sex scenes, mostly because they wouldn't understand what's going on. Children should probably not read books like "Mein Kampf" and get the impression that this is right. However, are we now to declare such simple and basic concepts as friendship and death as "inappropriate for children"? Isn't it the opposite? These books prepare children for the inevitable. Sometimes accidents happen. Grandparents, parents, family, and friends can all die. Fifth graders know what "death" means. Are we to shelter them forever?

Of course not. I read this book in fifth or fourth grade, and I loved it. I started crying, and crying. This book made me feel so many emotions, and that's what the purpose of a really good book is. Should we all read action-packed books with no feeling? Of course not! This portrays friendship and the loss of a friend in such a clear, solemn way. We see how Jesse (the main character) struggles to deal with this. He's only a kid, after all. We feel it all - without actually going through that pain.

Regarding other claims about this book that it is not for children, let us remember one thing. These are children in the book. They think like children. They act like children. Their friendships and ties and feelings are those of children. Adults and older teens tend to find this book "boring". It is not intended for adults, but for kids to read and grow.

I read this as a kid, and I loved it. I read it today, and I love it. It's bound to bring tears to your eyes and is so powerful and wonderful every time you read it. Every child reader will love and appreciate this book.

Tragic story, 1978 Newbery Medal-winner, will make you cry.

CHARACTERS: Jesse Oliver Aarons, Jr., a ten-year-old boy, middle child in a family of four sisters, whose parents are desperately poor; and Leslie Burke, new girl from the city whose arrival forever changes Jesse's life and the attitudes of the students at Lark Creek Elementary School.
SUMMARY: Young Jesse, who lives in poverty in the countryside in Virgnia, has big plans for the first week of school: he's run hard all summer and is sure he's now the fastest boy in fifth grade. Despite the fact that his dream is shattered by the arrival of a lean, lanky girl named Leslie Burke who moves to his school district from Arlington, Jesse and the newcomer become best friends. She never gloats over the fact that SHE is the fastest kid in the class, and the fact that the two are outcasts at school draws them into friendship.
Together the two find, name, and create a magical kingdom in the woods that they reach by swinging across a creek on a rope tied to a tree limb. Jesse and Leslie keep Terabithia their secret, telling neither family nor schoolmates about the hours of make-believe fun they spend there. They name themselves king and queen of Terabithia and play elaborate games almost every day.
Leslie's parents are attractive, educated professional writers who left their busy lives in the city for the simplicity and quiet of the country. The Burkes begin fixing up an old house close to Jesse's, and Jesse proves himself quite handy with carpentry and electrical repairs. When the weather is unfit for playing in the woods, Jesse and Leslie help Mr. Burke at home.
Jesse has a crush on the beautiful music teacher who was new to the school district the previous year. Fearing ridicule from his family (particulary his father) and classmates, Jesse has shown his artwork only to Miss Edmunds. One rainy day she invites Jesse to accompany her to Washington DC to see the National Gallery. Jesse is awed by the fabulous works of art, and regrets only that he didn't think to ask his teacher if Leslie could come with them.
When he returns from Washington, Jesse learns at a tender age how irrevocably one's life can change in the course of one short day.
IMPRESSIONS: This was required reading for a children's literature course that I took; otherwise, I probably wouldn't have chosen it on my own, judging solely by the title. However, "Bridge to Terabithia" is an excellent book. It's a quick read, but one that will leave you crying for hours--which is exactly what you want from a book sometimes!

poor teaching tool

this is one of the most unorganized, vague, incomplete text books I have come across. Not enough information is given to complete the drawings in the exercises. Much more attention should have been devoted to actually showing how piping is drawn rather than how to look up specs in tables. My fellow students harbor the same complaints. Find a better book.

In 1969, Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, and the letters from this period show him struggling to cope with the pressures created by his ever-growing international fame. The letters reveal how, later, he turned his mind to his legacy, as seen through his interactions with biographers and archivists. This volume also provides chronologies, explanatory notes, translations, and profiles of Beckett's chief correspondents.

What's to say -- the last of the wine, draining the glass. What a monumental achievement, these four volumes of Samuel Beckett's letters. In this final volume many of the letters are oracular -- koans of deep feeling. So it goes. (He liked Slaughterhouse Five). I can't go on. I'll go on.

The Brothers Karamazov, Dostoevsky's crowning achievement, is a tale of patricide and family rivalry that embodies the moral and spiritual dissolution of an entire society (Russia in the 1870s). It created a national furor comparable only to the excitement stirred by the publication, in 1866, of Crime and Punishment. To Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov captured the quintessence of Russian character in all its exaltation, compassion, and profligacy. Significantly, the book was on Tolstoy's bedside table when he died. Readers in every language have since accepted Dostoevsky's own evaluation of this work and have gone further by proclaiming it one of the few great novels of all ages and countries.

If you're looking for the 2nd Norton Edition, with new translation

I just want to alert readers: This page is for the Second Norton Critical Edition, which is a new translation. However, *all* of the comments and reviews below are for other translations and editions, and the "Look Inside" feature shows a completely different translation and edition.

Just so you know.

Amazon: Get with it, guys. I was wondering when you were going to get so big you could not handle the simple stuff. Here you go.

This is very poor quality for a hardcover.

We know the text is gold, what I review is the quality of this volume which cost $20 at the time of this writing. The size is good for holding in your hands at night. The paper and binding are cheap and of dubious permanency; the worst feature being the pages which are distractingly transparent so as to obscure the words when not flush with the page behind, and even then the text of the next page can be seen.

This is very poor quality for a hardcover.

The Brothers Karamazov is one of the greatest novels ever written. Creating unique, believable characters, Dostoevsky explores three major world views: Ivan, the intellectual atheist; Dimetri, the sensualist, and Alyosha, the Christian believer. Yet, each of these "types" exhibit moments of the other world views. The author portrays these world views in the matrix of Mother Russia. A murder mystery is the framework for revealing and solidifying the natures of each of these characters, but there are many other unforgettable characters in the Russia of the latter 19th century, as depicted here. Who could have birthed "the Grand Inquisitor" argument better, as the atheist's credo? A marvelous, devastating exposure of human nature!

Abundance Awaits!

I totally enjoyed this series. Dr.Vitale really explains how the law of attraction/creation works in our lives. I love when he says that we should "brainwash" ourselves with positive things because we have already been brainwashed with negativity. As I begin to really pay close attention to what I expose my ears and eyes to, it became clear to me the negative programming I "allowed" into my life...Whew! I'm glad to be aware!
The only thing I didn't like was the sanskrit chant that he shares. I'm not into chanting. I prefer prayer. (that's just my take on it)Otherwise good CD series!
