Narrator Mary Lou, 13, the second of the five Finney children, is quite put out when she has to play maid for her uncommunicative cousin Carl Ray, 17, who comes to stay while he looks for a job. He gets one, to Mary Lou's surprise, at the hardware store owned by their new neighbor Mr. Furtz, who shortly afterward dies of a heart attack. Not only does Carl Ray remain in his new job, but an anonymous benefactor leaves him money-just like in Great Expectations, as Mary Lou points out. There the resemblance to Dickens ends: the astute reader will early on figure out the mystery behind Carl Ray's inheritance. Mary Lou is also slow to pick up clues about why her cute classmate Alex is always hanging around. Despite the occasionally creaky plot, Mary Lou's bouncy entries are still a lot of fun. Readers will enjoy her wry commentary on The Odyssey (on the school reading list), and girls especially will identify with Mary Lou's disgust at the giddy behavior of boy-crazy best friend Beth Ann and her own giggly rhapsodies on her first romance ("I am sooooo happeeeeee I can hardly stand it!"). Ages 10-14.

Grade 6-9?Creech's newest story is told as a summer journal begrudgingly started as an English assignment. Mary Lou, 13, wonders if kisses with boys really taste like chicken; if her best friend will ever shut up about her new boyfriend; and how her visiting cousin, Carl Ray, can be such a silent clod, especially when someone has anonymously given him $5000. Later, when he is in a coma following a car accident, she rereads her journal and wonders how she could have been so unseeing. Mary Lou is a typical teen whose acquaintance with the sadder parts of life is cushioned by a warm and energetic family. Her entertaining musings on Homer, Shakespeare, and Robert Frost are drawn in nifty parallels to what is happening in her own life. When forbidden by her mother to say "God," "stupid," and "stuff," she makes a trek to the thesaurus to create some innovative interjections. Creech's dialogue is right on target. Her characterization is nicely done also. By comparison, this book is differently voiced than Walk Two Moons (HarperCollins, 1994), lacks that book's masterful imagery, and is more superficial in theme; but appropriately so. Creech has remained true to Mary Lou, who is a different narrator, and one who will win many fans of her own. The assignment to keep a journal during this summer vacation allows Mary Lou the privilege of documenting for other absolutely normal middle-graders the roller coaster process of adolescence--the evolution of friendships, the first kiss, even the gradual understanding and appreciation of people different from themselves. Creech's easy style and skill at writing dialogue are evident throughout. Some of the journal entries concerning Mary Lou's interpretation of her summer reading assignment, The Odyssey, may be a stretch for many in the targeted age group, but the chaotic adolescent emotions emanating from each entry are real. Absolutely Normal Chaos is absolutely normal 13-year-old angst and will probably have a much wider readership than Walk Two Moons (1994). Frances Bradburn

amazing book!!!!!

I thought that it was a great book because it wasn't narrated by the author, but by a character. I also thought that it was great because of the storyline. It wasn't a book where it gets confusing because it's all happening at once. And all of the events happen in an understandable way. I also thought that it was cool how almost every singe event that you thought was coming, really wasn't. Me personally I think that the very beginning was a little on the boring side, but once the story really got going it was really good. I highly recommend this book!!!!!✅

Absolutely normal chaotic fabulous book!

This book was wonderful I loved it and I couldn't stop reading! This has many silly adventures, fights with friends, sweet young couples, tragic deaths, and homesick worries. I would definitely recommend this book for anyone nine years to fourteen years old. I wouldn't forget to read the sequel to Absolutely Normal Chaos: Walk Two Moons- both great books! Read them for sure!!!

This book is is full of surprises! Carl Ray,Mary Lou`s cousin,comes to live with the Finney`s. He says very little words,but ends up opening up to the family. Along the way,Mary Lou starts to have feelings for Alex Cheevy,and they share dates and kisses together. When Mary Lou goes with Carl Ray back to his home with his family, Mary Lou meets some strange people. This book is great for children and teen girls! Enjoy as you ride along with Mary Lou and her summer vacation!

Seminal Work in the History of Hand-to-Hand Fighting, Still Relevant Today

William E. Fairbairn's 1926 "Defendu" offers practical and historical perspective on armed and unarmed self-defense. The techniques consist of high-percentage throws, kicks, takedowns, falling techniques, and his trademark edge-of-hand blow. Fairbairn, along with Rex Applegate and a handful of others, was one of the great martial arts innovators of modern times. He was a full-spectrum fighter, whether it was by knife, stick, point-shooting, and unarmed combat. Fairbairn -- though well-known today -- even provides his Judo credentials, from the Kodokan school in Tokyo, no less. In our ostensibly more transparent age, one need only click through YouTube to watch a coterie of self-professed "self-defense experts" with dubious credentials sharing their insights.

To that end, I disagree with arguments that Fairbairn's techniques have aged. Fairbairn offers applications, alternatives, and trees to other techniques. He developed Defendu with Eric Anthony Sykes, ahead of the famous dagger the two developed in the 1940s. It's an intuitive and simple system, drawn from the "old Judo," clearly tied to its jiu-jitsu roots, where the toughest locks, takedowns and atemi waza remained intact. The practitioner can use the techniques to control or maim; the falls and basic strikes support other aspects of self-defense. Keep in mind that the book appeared earlier in Fairbairn's career. His system builds further over time, and subsequent texts and training films illustrate this progression (One "lost" training video in Greek has resurfaced, meant for saboteurs and resistance fighters in WWII).

Narrative is minimal, largely consisting of explanations that accompany photos.

Fairbairn's experience in armed and unarmed combatives, gleaned both from military service and hundreds of fights while an officer of the Shanghai Municipal Police force, placed him among a handful of men who transformed modern hand-to-hand fighting . Fairbairn's subsequent involvement in training U.S., Canadian, and British military and commando forces, developing Singapore's riot police, and his work with the FBI and NYPD are well-documented.

One complaint, and my reason for deducting one star: Paladin should have taken greater care in its presentation of Defendu. The photographs simply haven't transferred well. Much of the book has the appearance of a bad photocopy of a prior photocopy. A digital rendering program could have been used to create line drawings based on the images, or insets could have been added to show hand positioning in key stills. Some pictures that feature small joint manipulation, grips, and chokes are nearly indiscernible. A good companion to this book, which uses similar techniques and clear line-drawings, is Malcolm Harris' "Effective Self-Defense" (sometimes titled "Lethal Self-Defense.") It uses the same modified Judo-jiu-jitsu approach and similar striking methodologies. Though out-of-print, used copies are available on Amazon.

Good basic skillset

The kiss rule is alive and well with this book. For those who want to defend themselves and their loved ones but don't want to spend hours in the dojo this is a great way to start and end. Techniques proven in modern warfare not debated over which style is better/best.

Easy to learn to do you own nails

This book was easy to read and learn what you need to do to be able to do your own nails. Now I can save money doing them myself at home, and not spend a lot of wait time or money on full sets or getting a fill. It's also good to learn to do this at home and save the risk of germs or even worse Hep C that you can get in a nail salon for re-using it's equipment, polish, files, etc.

Unbelievable!

This is absolutely an eye opener into the science of man-tracking. It details how the mind controls the body as well as how external influences play on the decisions that the mind makes. If that isn't enough, this book goes into extreme detail of how the body mechanics and the mind work together during locomotion and being able to read the who, what, and why a person moved the way they did from the foot just contacting the ground. From psychomotor to locomotor this book gave me the ability to read and interpret human behavior just by "reading" the ground where a person has walked. As a man-tracker with around 25 years of experience, this has opened my eyes more than anything I have ever learned. I can say without a doubt whatsoever that anyone who is involved in SAR, Law Enforcement or military tracking would highly benefit from reading and studying forensic Spoorology.
